1000 euro bike

I imagine posts like this appear all the time and the OP is usually told to be more specific.

I'm looking for a road bike, my max budget is 1000 euros.
I don't know much in terms of what spec to look for, all I know is 105 is better than Tiagra, Tiagra is better than Sora, etc.

Seems as you guys are educated here, what would you go for if you had a grand?

So far I was looking at the Trek 1.5 but I have seen some better spec bikes for the same money such as:

    http://www.ridley-bikes.com/pd/gb/en-gb/6/216/fitness-track/eos
    http://www.ktm-bikes.at/en/road/road/road-aluminium/Strada1000_copy.php

I was also looking at a Cube but can't remember the exact model.

Any tips here would be most welcome.

    Cheers.

What about this one guys? It is just about 1000e. probably the same one as OP was looking at.

    SRAM Apex
    Lovely Frame

    Very Very Light bike

    WANT ONE

In order of value for money it probably goes...

    1. Canyon,
    2. Boardman,
    3. KTM,
    4. Cube,
    5. Ridley.

Cube and Ridley have triple chainrings which might be necessary if you're very unfit and/or Large.

Canyon and Boardman have 10 speeds at the rear.

Cube is the best looking IMO, but then all cube bikes look good to me.

KTM is probably the least common if you want to be unique.

All will do a good job.

What about this one in particular?

    http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=35&idproduct=37843

It really caught my eye, seen it in the shop, lovely bike.

Anything in particular yous wouldn't be too keen on spec wise?

I've seen it elsewhere for 999 euros.

1100 euro and you are getting a pretty heavy frame with a 9-speed groupset. And I would be a fan of Ridleys!

I know it's not a popular choice, but when you consider you can get a partly equipped Rival groupset on a full carbon frame from Planet-X for 100 euro more than the Ridley, it makes me wonder.

Still, first bike you are probably best shopping local. It's a pretty decent bike. If it was me I would probably go cheaper and get a Sora equipped bike (like the cube) as a starting point, you will either love cycling or hate it, either way you will be selling the bike sometime down the line and looking to get money for an upgrade/partying.

    Planet X SRAM Rival FTW:

    http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/CBPXSLPSP/sl-pro-carbon-sram-rival

It's a full SRAM Rival groupset Dirk, as far as I can see.

Bought one this time last year as an upgrade from a Giant Defy 4 and cant fault it, very light!

Do any shops sell these or do I need to get it online?

Accepting Dirks point about relative pricing, if you do fancy the Ridley, go in and talk to the guys in Cyclesuperstore, and haggle a bit. I had recent dealings with them and can only compliment their customer service and attention to a issue that I had. I'd not hesitate to recommend them to deal with and as a first bike, its no harm at all to have a local retailer to work with (rather than an online purchase).

I have no connections with CSS

Canyon distribute online only - the reason why they are such ridiculous good value compared to trek, specialized etc

Cheers, I've seen it for 100 less elsewhere and they also said they would be willing to give an additional 7% discount, I'm leaning towards that.

Ah I'm using the bike to work scheme so won't be doing that so...

    Thanks.

Unless your employer has placed such a restriction on you, you are free to get the bike from wherever you choose. Of course buying online comes with the gamble of not being able to sit on the bike prior to the purchase. As it so happens, I got an MTB from Canyon through the BTW scheme.

Unfortunately they deal with http://www.raleigh2work.ie who have a list of shops I must get the bike from.

unfortunately my company is also only dealing with raleigh2work. I am in the same position as OP. I have been looking at this bike for the 1000e:

    http://www.eurocycles.ie/Road_Bikes/Road_Bikes_Under_%E2%82%AC1000/Felt_F85_Roadbike/4486_p.aspx#

    or

    http://www.eurocycles.ie/Road_Bikes/Road_Bikes_Under_%E2%82%AC1000/Focus_Variado_Triple/3366_p.aspx#
and this gets a great review here:
    http://www.roadcyclinguk.com/gear-news/1000-road-bike-buyers-guide/4803-2.html#historysub

although i dont think its the same bike as its not a 105 groupset

however i hadnt yet seen the recommended ones on this thread with the cube and the ridley ( which are great looking bikes)

can the experts recommend which gives the best value of the 3 for a rookie?

    thanks

I'm no expert but Felt's are a loverly looking bike

The Felt being a compact double @ 50/34T might be tough on a beginner in the hills, but you could change the cassette to suite :pac:

A compact chainset should make it quite 'hill friendly'.

Honestly, I prefer the triple setup myself.

That it's a compact double won't make the hills more difficult. It'll depend somewhat on the cassette also. The larger cogs in the cassette make for easier climbing. The larger the chainrings the more difficult it is to climb but the easier it is to pick up speed on the flats. Having a triple just gives one more variation.

    hi,

so would anybody have any more thoughts on this? which bike would be most suited. bare in mind, that i plan to use bike for cycling to work 2-3 times per week, 50km road trip

    thanks,
    Tommy

They all are suitable bikes from reputable makers. Some are better value than others though.

If you are going to commute you might check that they can take a rack and panniers. Most entry level aluminium bikes can, but a small minority can't. The KTM doesn't seem to have eyelets for a rack on the seatstay. Neither does the Ridley, but I'm not sure from the picture.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,604 ✭✭✭petethedrummer

Ok looking at your 2 posts again, you can chose between the Cube, Focus and Ridley?

There's not much to chose between the Cube and the Focus(if its Tiagra). They're both better value than the ridley IMO. The Cube is still the best looking. Someone posted a pic of one in the 'images of beauty' thread and it looks great. It also looks like none of those 3 take a rack (if that bothers you), though there's always a work around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭TommyTheGun

thanks for the info pete the drummer. well asctually, i was more swaying towards the felt actually from eurocycles for the 1000. is it likely i could get discount on this price would you think?

rack and panniers not really a priority i must say, not at the moment anyway.

have to agree, i was researching the cube, fantastic looking. but am i right that the specs wouldnt be as good as the felt? 105 components on the felt

    thanks,
    tommy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,604 ✭✭✭petethedrummer

Right, i'm slow today, I didn't see the link to the Felt. Yeah I would go for the Felt with 105, the only problem is the Shifters(if it is a problem). Those are not Shimano, they are Shimano compatible Microshift shifters. They seem to get reasonable reviews but aren't rated much on this forum. I have no experience with them myself. I've read about them on other forums and some people seem reasonable happy with them.

So its the Felt with a question mark over the shifters. They can be replaced, but shifters aren't cheap. Do a bit of googling on microshift and see what you make of them yourself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭TommyTheGun

    Thanks petethedrummer,

Im going to have a look at the felt today so ill see it in the flesh for the first time. Ill mention the shifters and see what the guy says.

think ill check out the cube in CSS on weds cos its a great looking bike in fairness, although component wise ill probably be mad not to get the felt.

all depends on who is giving the best value too i suppose

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,604 ✭✭✭petethedrummer

The Felts are almost as good looking as the Cubes IMO.

Got myself cube peloton last week, great bike for the price. Seen felt one in the shop, looks much worse in real, also brakes and shifters are no name, while in cube you get full tiagra

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,486 ✭✭✭manafana

i got my cube attempt 2010 for 1125 from LBS, you could be lucky and find one left over selling at below grand now, i recommend to anyone to spend the extra and go for full 105.

now thinking of upgrading and going carbon thou, ribble bikes are looking tempting

    Spanner/Works... For commuting -> This

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭TommyTheGun

ok. have choice now. felt f85 for 950, if i can get my hands on one, they are sold out at the mo, or a focus variado now reduced to 800.

    any thoughts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 641 ✭✭✭howardmarks
