I was just wondering when the figure will drop of people unemployed. Taking into account people who left the country too. Its a little under 15% if I remember directly, so does anyone have a rough idea of when the number will get smaller?
    cheers.

    Moved from Economics /Mod

The latest forecast I'm aware of is Davys forecasting employment growth of 0.4 in 2012 bring the unemployment rate down to 14.2%. Note that these forecasts were before the release of the bank stress tests. Given the uncertainty facing the economy who knows what turn events will take.

    Not a clue.
More worryingly, nobody else has a clue either.

Employment numbers have been consistently falling for a number of years now up to the last release from the CSO although the quarterly drop is less than it was. When we see them going back up significantly then we can say unemployment is being tackled head on rather than relying on emigration\back to education\FAS schemes.

Unemployment is going to be a problem for along time.
But there is one thing that will help the numbers in the imediate term that has not been mentioned in the media. That is germany(as well other eu states) in due to open up its economy to eastern european workers.
Eastern Europeans will be less likely to move hear and many will go to germany from hear for work and many will stay because this is home for them now.
Our economy will be in decline for years and we wont need additional workers for along time to come. Immigration will keep unemployment below 15% in the near term.

Not only will emigration keep unemployment below 15%, these figures will also be continually spun to us as there being "less people on the live register".

What % of the 15% are construction workers and retail staff? Probably quite a lot.

Neither of these sectors will be doing well for the next few years.

Don't forget the rate doesn't give a completely accurate picture. Self employed can't sign on. My husband would have employed up to 15 during the boom (construction) because he is a self employed builder he can't sign on, and he's not working.
