Summons Question

So I was stopped at a Garda checkpoint on the road to Ringaskiddy in early January, one of those diesel dipping checkpoints. I was driving my father's diesel car (on which I am a named driver, he was in the passenger seat with a broken foot). Car was/is taxed, tested and we happened to have the cert. of insurance in the car with us. Garda gave the discs and cert, as well as my (full)licence, a look over while the car was being dipped. Diesel was legal etcetcetc.

Now, the Garda (have his badge number) said everything was fine and sent us on our way. He didn't ask me to present any documents to the station or anything. He literally said "thanks, on your way" and that was the end of it. Lo and behold today I get a summons at my door from a local garda. Summons is for failing to present documents at my garda station

I've rang the station and they told me to ring back after 10 tonight if I can as that's when the Garda who stopped us starts his shift. Now I'm just a tad confused, during the whole dipping process the Garda didn't write anything down. He gave my papers a cursory glance to see if the dates were right etc.

I'm not worried about having to go to court etc 'cos I have all the right papers, I just have no idea how this could have happened? Will I have to go to court? Should I have presented at the Garda station anyway? Thanks for any replies!

chances are it was probably an admin error on behalf of the Garda .... ask the garda when you talk to him if you did anything wrong - chances are he'll say that he will take care of it.

It may be a mixup. Speak to the Garda and ask why he wanted your documents as you presented them at the time.
You may have to go in to show them but that's a slight inconvenience compared to a court date.
Don't argue if he wants to see documents again, it won't help any.

I'd say its a huge mixup on part of the gardai

Contact garda station, arrange to meet garda in question with your docs, summons will be struck out by him without need to appear presuming all is in order.

Just to follow up, the super rang me about an hour ago and asked if I could bring down the details etc. I did and he apologised, said he would sort it out and to forget about it. Relieved! Thanks for all the replies.

Good stuff - these things happen - likely he just mixed you up with someone who didn't have docs with them and hadn't produced.
