Advice for my employment prospects

I ran a small business for the past 12 years. Now it is virtually gone.
The market has shrunk although there is a small bit of trade going.
I am in two minds as to whether I should jack it in and seek a job working for another company or continue to trade out of the recession.
Some friends say I shouldn't give it up as I have worked hard for the past 12 years while others say I should seek a job.
Of course I am well aware that seeking a job is a lot more difficult and competition if fierce.
The other question that bothers me is would I cope working for a large company?
At the moment I am struggling big time. And the recovery may take another five years.
    I would appreciate advice.

Would not having any money make this decision for you?

What are your options? How are you surviving at the moment?

Is there any option for you to take part time work - even in a field that's not related to your main job?

That could generate some extra income for you, and get you access to the PAYE tax credit (which is why a lot of people starting self employment try to do it). And still not lose you the benefits of having your own business.

You can apply for Jobseekers Allowance if you are self employed and you business is doing badly. You will be assessed on your profit and loss accounts. There is help out there for you.

Do both! Continue to trade and look out for a job. As someone who was in the same boat 3 yrs ago, I feel your pain. Altho I was delighted to get out when I did, i have found it tough finding work. if you can apply for jobs and wait for an offer to come in, it might allow you to weigh the two up
