Decent but not too expensive tool set?

The Halfords tools actually aren't bad at all. I bought a Halfords professional 3/8 ratchet as a temporary replacement for a Teng ratchet I broke and its still working perfectly, about 3 years later.

I have the 150 piece version of that set and it certainly seems to cover most of the bases for an amateur who just wants to do their own servicing etc.

    http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_173083_categoryId_212410_langId_-1?cm_sp=Intelligent_Offer-_-Product_Details_Zone_1-_-Blank&iozone=PDPz1

Only complaint I'd have so far is that the extension bar for the ratchet seems to lose it's grip of the socket a little easy which can make retrieving the socket from a recess (e.g. spark plug) a little difficult....

I've bought a good few bits from Halfords up and down and found them to be pretty good quality and good value for money in the main. I bought a 1/4" socket set on offer for €20 and it's a fantastic little set and really good quality. Just be careful on the offers though- while I would buy their stuff on offer without hesitation I'd probably look elsewhere when not on offer (the "full" prices quoted are unrealistic for some of the sets etc). That set looks good value at that price though and reviews are good too.

Cheers lads. Reason I'm inclined towards Halfords is I got a ten percent voucher aswell as a gift card I need to use up.

My brother got a good set from Lidl but who knows when it will be back up.

I'd rate the Halfords tools above Lidl or Aldi's offerings anyday, much better finish in my opinion.

I think I have the 120 piece, it's grand for the DIY lad I think, rarely would you need something not in it. Big deep sockets for reversing switches would be the only thing that springs to mind that aren't in there. The sockets are 12 sided though I think but that's easy to upgrade if you are so inclined. The ratchets are fairly strong, I had a 3m long pipe as a breaker bar over the small drive ratchet and it held.

I think this set is better value for €90 delivered.

Thanks for that link CJ, never heard of "Rothewald" before any good?

Bought the Halfords set lads. Looks pretty good. With gift cards and vouchers came to the tidy sum of 36 euro cash!:D

But I did buy the wrong belt for the car!!:o

I bought a belt in Halfords once, it was way too long, factors had the correct listing and had it in stock.

Iv used a Halfords set for 4 years now. Ratchets work just fine.

I did break a socket and a hex head socket being a brute but it was not the tool set that caused that it was me.

Perfectly fine for light DIY stuff.

As for buying car parts there nooooooo. Local motor factors win hands down.

Actually got the belt in Tallaght Auto Parts but it was my own error, I thought my car had a tensioner pulley but it doesn't, it's the stretchy type of belt I need. Which seem like a pain in the arse to fit!

Most of halfords spanners well the ratchet ones anyway are either made by draper or the same company who make the draper ones. I've had a few halfords tools in my time and have failed to break any of them. However if your going to be using them a lot the likes of teng (which are not overly expensive either) or snap on ( very expensive but have lifetime warranty )

Some of the Halfords ratcheting spanners are/ were made by Gearwrench.

Sealey hand tools are not great for prolonged use IMO..

I have alot of their workshop equipment in work and at home and never had any issues. It seems its just their hand tools that are poor....even feels cheap to use.

I got stung with a large water pump pliers and a very dodgy ratchet.

They were not willing to anything about either, will never buy them again for that reason
