Looking for the sage advice of the motor forum - not sure which one to go for finally saying goodbye to my 00 Focus it's been a loyal servent but I've narrowed the list to the VW Golf or VW Jetta,

What's peoples thoughts on which one?

A Jetta is essentially a saloon Golf.

How many doors do you require?

Probably would need the five with work - good point on Jetta just a Golf Saloon

    Golf = 3/5, Jetta = 4

Golf residuals would be way superior to Jetta - less depreciation.

I think the Golf looks sportier because its a hatchback. It depends on the indivdual wether or not looks are as important as practicality.

Was that not released last year? I'm sure I've seen them on the road!

The new jetta won't be out till may, you probably just saw a passat and were farther away from it than you thought.

OP, also check out the Octavia, Fluence (massively cheaper) lancer mivec diesel, The jetta will probably have a waiting list and be pricey enough to start with. Last of the outgoing focus would be worth a look too as would the now long in the tooth volvo s40

Are You thinking of the 7th Gen Passat? it looks pretty similar to that Jetta being released in May. All the latest vw models kinda of resemble one another in terms of styling, like Fords.

3 and 5 doors are hatchback, 4 door is saloon.

On a car, if it has glass on it its counted as a door,

    Hyundai coupe, 3 doors
    Nissan qashqai, 5 doors
    Mazda rx8, 4 doors
    Mazda mx5, 2 doors

    Etc etc

    2011 Passat:

    2011 Jetta:

I can see how easily it would be to confuse both.

OP, I would not buy a brand new "old" model Jetta, it is based on the MkV Golf that was launched in 2004, the competition has moved on significantly since then.

is that also the platform on which the Octavia is based? If so, why does everyone here rave about it?

I'm talking about the design, packaging and safety of the old Jetta. It looks and feels outdated.

BTW the MkVI Golf still sits on the MkV's platform too but it has a simpler and cheaper to produce suspension setup.

what improvements safety wise does the mk6 golf have over the mk5?
my understanding is that the mk5 had front, side and curtain airbags, esp and all that. it has a 5 star ncap rating.
This is as good as it gets, the mk6 is a half baked reskin and not a leap forward in any respect.

Granted the outgoing jetta has been out a while, but apart from the corporate nose and different interior, i cant see the new jetta being demonstrably better.

nobody likes to see old models being sold, but if the op needs 7-8 years driving then a significantly discounted old model jetta would be the job.

Yeah MkVI scores slightly more points than the MkV but mainly due to having a driver's knee airbag fitted.

    MkVI:

I was looking at both of these cars over the last few weeks - One thing that you need to consider is the wait time for delivery if you want anything in particular in the car. I was told it would be 12-16 weeks

The car is only being launched in the middle of May!

So I went with a Golf!

This thread is nearly 2 years old I'd say the op has bought a car at this stage.

Golf would be my choice but if boot space is important go for the Jetta
