Hi, was wondering if anyone can help. Im about to go into my 3rd year of my English degree in the uk but it is my ambition to teach in the republic or ireland at secondary level and need to be making my decision in the coming months as to wether i want to do a pgce in uk or a pgde in ireland. I have a number of questions but cannot seem to find any answers???

    1. Do i have to learn the irish language to teach at secondary level?

    2. Do i have to teach two subjects at secondary level in the rep of
ireland, and if so as i will only have a degree in english would only being trained to gcse level in a range of other subjects suffice and would this actually get me onto a course to do a pgde?

    3. If i decide to do a pgde in the rep of ireland would i be classed as an international student?

4.If i choose to do a pgde in rep of ireland how do i apply for funding, in that do i have to apply through my own student finance for course fees and student loans/grants or do i apply through the rep of ireland system of this?

    5. does anyone actually know what criteria i have to meet for a pgde course at nui galway (i know it says you have to have a level 8 degree so will my degree actually be classed as a level 8 if i have an English BA Hons)?

thanks to anyone who can help

    rachel

I can only answer question one for you, no you do not need to speak Irish to teach in a secondary (you only need it to teach in a primary school though)
