following on from a thread on another forum I decided to contact the gardai today in relation to vans being placed outside "enforcement zones"

I thought the following reply would be useful to everyone!
Any Go Safe privatised Safety Cameras carrying out enforcement
operations will be marked and will be within the zones referred to on
    the Garda Website.

Any unmarked safety camera vans (which are in a variety of colours) are
carrying out traffic surveys or staff training not enforcement and may
be outside of the zones. Marked vans observed outside of the zones are
being utilised for training and / or traffic surveys. There are no
notices issued for any alleged offences captured during training
    excercises.

Garda speed camera vans (ROBOT) may be utilised outside of the zones for
speed enforcement according to local requirements and may be marked or
    unmarked

    Believe what?

GoSafe cameras operate within the GoSafe zones
GoSafe survey vans can operate anywhere and suggest new areas for GoSafe camera zones
Garda ROBOT vans can be anywhere.

I don't see much of a conspiracy in there?

I think mr cynic above is referring to the statement that if a stickered up van is outside an enforcement zone then they will not issue a fine.

Considering that is a direct email response from the garda website I reckon I would have a pretty good case argueing against it anyway...

I'm happy enough to take that as fact so only the vans in zones may issue fines

I thought these "safety" cameras were being placed on roads with a history of being dangerous?

    So what are they surveying?

Funnily enough I was heading West on Saturday morning, just outside Longford at around 8.30am and on a wide straight stretch of road just after you leave Longford and enter the countryside there was an unmarked van parked on the side of the road

On my way back on Sunday there was a marked van in the same spot

Have no idea how that stretch of road can be considered unsafe

They're surveying the amount of cars that are breaking the limit.

One of the unmarked vans was in Ballymun this morning parked on the path just down past the school where the ESB used to have a yard at the traffic lights with collins avenue. Normally, they place the vans further down outside DCU's entrance. Just noticed it as we drove past as it had the distinctive windows on the back but was completely unmarked otherwise.

saw a van the other day on the m20, turn off for shannon airport, northbound carriageway. definitely not on the garda maps as a safety camera zone.

was on the opposite carriageway myself, but i think it was unmarked alright.

the only good stretch of road between ballinasloe and roscommon is outside athleague , dead straight, mile wide it is the only place i have seen a speed van, maroon unmarked within area covered by warning sign met a lunatic in a jag on a real twisty bit of that route but no van will ever be seen where an accident might occur

And where the signs should be moved to when the 'dangerous' routes are identified for future revenue generation activities enforcement
