Being a contractor in Ireland

    Hi,

I left Ireland 4 years ago to work in London. After a few job changes I have found myself in the position of working for a company with somewhat liberal policies on how/where their employees work. This gives me the opportunity to return to Ireland with a good salary (47-48,000 euro) and relative security (the company itself is a UK company so not vulnerable to the crap going on back home). My legal status would be as a contractor to the company (this is just a legal formality though, I would enjoy many of the same benefits of a permanent employee).

My question then is, will I be self-employed? Will I be able to set up as a company if I so wish? Would I want to?

As a side question, does the salary I mentioned sound like an adequate amount to enjoy a good standard of living in Dublin?

Thanks for any replies in advance,

Yes that salary is a very good one by current Irish standards. You'll be more than comfortable with it, assuming you don't want a wildly extravagant lifestyle.

I'm not sure how the contractor thing works. I'm unemployed at the moment.I know at a recent careers fair I met with a company that set you up as self employed here, process your taxes for you, deal with revenue etc, etc. But that's assuming you're working for an Irish company as a contractor.I'll see if I can find the name of the company and PM it to you.You could probably ask them anyway, if you want to find out more. Either that or maybe ring Revenue themselves?? (or would that be silly?)

    Hope that helps
