Hi Folks, looking for a bit of advice please.
Time to move on from my specialised sirrus (great bike) and get a road bike.
Won’t be racing, just maybe 20-60K+++ spins and cycling to work, the odd sportive.

I have looked at a few bikes, trek etc and it seems to be a choice/compromise between an Aluminium with good gear components eg full 105 or Ultegra or a carbon with maybe some 105 and other components with reduced quality.
Trek madone 4.5 or 2.5 both a bit above budget but could maybe stretch to €1700.

For the type of cycling I do, I think there is probably no big advantage of carbon.
    Am I correct in this?

I see the canyon recommended a lot here, but not available to me under the CTW.
(I could just buy it direct from Canyon and not bother with the CTW, risk would be with sizing etc).

Any suggestions on good bikes to look at, I have been to 1 or 2 LBS, but need to look a bit more.
    Tks

You will feel so much better pedalling a nice carbon bike :D

Has your employer placed this restriction on you? The CTW scheme doesn't restrict the purchase to Irish bricks and mortar shops. I bought a bike through the BTW scheme from Canyon.

I had a similar dilemma and decided to get a good carbon frame with 105 and some lesser components with a view to upgrading the lesser components over time from cycling adverts.

You could get a Wilier Izoard for about €1500 with shimano 105

Tks for the advice, will check out the wiliers.
The ctw scheme has a big number of outlets including wiggle & CRC, but no Canyon!!
Will go to a few more bikeshops for a look around.

Where can you get a Willier Izoard for 1500?

Cycling Pursuits in Limerick gave me a price of 1550 for a 2011 Izoard with Shimano 105, elsewhere, have gotten prices from 1750 to 2900 depending on groupset/wheel mix

The Bike Hub in Howth are charging 1750, and it comes with either sora or Tiagra - cant remember which! The price was not negotiable either!

I got an Orbea Onix , carbon frame with 105 and Mavic Aksium wheels from Stagg cycles in Lucan village , Dublin.

They were very good to deal with and gave a good trade in price on my old bike plus the CTW scheme.

They have the 2011 model listed at E1500 at the moment. Consider it if ye don't want a Trek, Giant etc. I'm very happy with mine but had to change the saddle as it was very uncomfortable but it could be fine for others.

Does that 1500 for the Izoard include the bike 2 work scheme? If not I may go for one instead of a TCR

No, that's the retail price so it'll be 1550 minus whatever your discount is
Going to go for it, have decent wheels to put on it so nice mix

Do you know what wheels it comes with? It seems like a great offer, but it sounds like they custom make the bike themselves. He kept emphasising that it was the izoard frame with shimano 105 instead of the izoard bike with shimano 105. So I wonder if they are giving you crappy wheels/other bike parts?!

Yeah, think the wheels are Fulcrum 5s or 7s. Didn't listen too hard as I'm using my own.
For the price can be upgrading as the budget allows

Have a look at Ribble.co.uk, they have a Sportive Racing bike and it gets great reviews, (infact it's the same frame Condor and Dolan use and sell for much more) and they get great great reviews. You can use the "Bike Builder" to build up your own bike to your specs. Have a look at the "sportive Racing" and build it with Shimano 105, very good price.
I'll probably be ordering on with Ultegra and Kysrium wheels in a month or two (once I get my knee sorted).

Saw the Ribbles in the flesh at the London bike show, would be my 2nd choice behind the Wilier/if they did btw

Hey, we seem to have very similar taste, my first two choices are the Ribble Sportive Racing and the Wilier Izoard XP. Keep us informed as to what one you go for.

BTW: I'd also suggest the FOCUS Cayo 105.

Still not 100% which colour - silver/white or red/white as both look good, going for the red/white Izoard with 105, putting my own mavics on it then.

I'd go for the Red/White too, just looks really nice and you can trim it with red/white bar tape, saddle and tires, if you want. Where are you getting the Izoard with 105? As everywhere I look have it built with Campag.

Cycling pursuits in Limerick, think it's a limited build of a mix of stock. Have seen Shimano options online in the uk, don't think they do those options here

Just to let you know, that 1550 offer in Limerick is only for the silver frame, not the red one. Don't know if that makes any difference.

As in the 'Bianco/Argento' one? It looks much nicer to me just judging by the photo on wilier site.

That's it, Bianco/Argento. There's a Petacci team special in Black/Yellow that looks the biz as well. All 3 look good tbh.
