Just want to get peoples views on this.
Trading in an mondeo diesel 05 car and have looked at 2 cars, both avensis petrols.
2008 base model, 50k miles, cost to change is 5300.
2009 Luna model, 50k miles, cost to change is 10000.

    What would you go for??

I'd go for the Luna. Nicer spec, has alloys, climate control, front fogs, all electric windows, cruise control etc

The luna model i think only came in 1.8 but I am not fully sure about that.
Plus the new avensis model came out in 09 so there is a chance it is the nicer new model instead of the old.

I'd pick the Luna model too, Great car.

Luna was available in 1.8 petrol and 2.0 D-4D diesel.

Just take note of the motor tax on both. Assuming both are the old model Avensis, 08 one if registered before 1st July will be on the old engine based tax system. Post June 08 and 09 will be on the co2 based system and is over €600 to tax.

Luna spec is definately the one to go for. 1.6 litre is underpowered and Aura spec is too basic.

It would really depend on how much €4700 meant to me :)

    +1

Essentially you are looking at paying almost 5k more for the higher spec of the same model? (and of course a different number on the front)

Thats the way I was thinking. 4700 for a car a year newer with climate control? - Im thinking i will keep my 4700 in my pocket.

I stand to be corrected, but any car in 08 can be taxed under the c02 model, ie cars registered pre july could switch over at their next tax renewal?

I'd go with the 05 Mondeo Diesel.

Have you looked at the Mazda 6? Petrol models are going cheap these days and it is more modern than the Avensis you are looking at?

The Avensis wouldn't rate beside a Mk3 Mondeo, be it the 03-08 model or the current one, and the Mk4 Mondeo is a massive improvement on the Mk3. The Avensis is a very second rate car besides the Mk4 Mondeo - it is much quieter than the Mk3 Mondeo and the fit and finish is a huge improvement. Sure it's not as nice as a Passat but the gap is much smaller than badge snobs would have you believe and besides a Mondeo will be much more reliable and current model Passats are very cheap feeling compared to the B5 model from 97 to 05.

The 09 Avensis petrols are on €630 tax if it's the old model - so they will be completely sale proof secondhand when the current model diesel is on €156.

08s reg'd before 1 July are allowed switch over to the CO2 system - but in the case of a petrol Avensis, this means paying more to tax it, so not only is there no point, but you can't even if you wanted to!

The Mazda 6 is a great car and provided you don't go for the diesel, is superb for reliability.

To be honest, I've not fully committed myself to changing my car - I might just stay with the mondeo!!

    If it's the 90bhp Mondeo I wouldn't keep it. I spent 20,000 miles in one :(

Cars registered pre July had the option of either, which ever was the cheapest.

Aside from going up 3 years I don't see the point :) And to me going up 3 years isn't the fab thing lots of folk reckon it is. I'd keep the Mondeo too.

in todays economic climate, nearly 5K is a lot of dosh, if the mondy stands you little or nothing and there's no problems with it, I'd hold onto the car and my cash.. I have a mazda 6 a 04 1.8 petrol from new, only thing its needed outside of normal servicing and normal wear and tear ie brakes and tyres was a tensioner on the power steering pump/alternator... great car but quite heavy on fuel especially if you drive as it was meant to be, ZOOM ZOOM lol..
