So you are in gear 1 and 1? If thats the case you need a gear service.

If your in Gear 1 and say whatever the last gear on your cassette is, then your chain crossing and should stop using this gear combo as it wears out your drive train, try keep the chain in a straight line, easier on your drivetrain and pocket ;)

The chain could be hitting the front mech ( the device that moves the chain from the large to small chainring and vice versa). This happens as the chain is moved up and down the cogs at the rear. You just need to adjust your front mech a tad with the shifter.

    What bcmf said!

I bought a new road bike a few weeks ago and had this problem. Basically the cable to the front derailleur stretched and the derailleur shifted slightly to the left and was continually rubbing the chain.

I loosened the cable clamp, pulled the cable tighter and re-tightened the cable clamp. Job done, no rubbing, no noise.

And a sense of achievement for fixing it myself, being a mechanical dunce and all. :D
