    Hi all,
Brother is looking at both of these. Both 1.6 Petrol. Both same price. 2 year warranty on Laguna but only 1 on the Octavia
Would like to hear from anybody that has had any experience with either car.

    Thanks

Any reason he's not looking at the Diesel Laguna?

the Laguna he's looking at is not the only 08 petrol Lagina on Carzone is it? Thats the Laguna II, The Laguna III can be got for a couple of grand more, will be diesel so much better fuel economy and cheaper tax.

The 1.6 is quite gutless in a car that size.

+1 also the newer Laguna is a way better car..

How long does he plan to keep the car?

If he plans to keep it for a good few years then the 08 Laguna could be a good buy if it is indeed the one at €8k. Fair enough it is the old model Laguna but it is still only 3 years old and most of problems of the earlier ones would have been ironed out at that stage plus it has 2 years warranty. Also it still has a decent safety rating even compared to the newer designed Octavia.

On the other hand if he plans on only keeping it for a year or two then the Octavia probably makes more sense as it will be easier to sell on.

TBH I doubt thered be much issue shifting either. They will be 1.6's. Big car + cheap tax + sub 5-6k price = seller

Most people looking at 08 cars will want a diesel because they come with low motor tax. People looking at 06 cars like the Octavia know that the petrol is cheaper to tax than the diesel. The Laguna is undesireable right now hence the low asking price, in 2 to 3 years time it will be practically worthless. So buying it with the plan to drive it into the ground makes alot of sense as it's a 3 year old large family hatchback for €8k and comes with 2 years warranty.

Its not the laguna on Carzone but very similar. He plans on driving which ever one he picks untill it stops so will not be selling it on.

That's a pretty easy one. The Octavia Mk2 has a bigger boot. The Laguna II is better in just about every other area. Engine power, ride comfort, safety, looks etc. Reliability of an 08 1.6 should also be very good. And the one you're looking at is 2 years younger and with double the warranty compared to the Skoda.

You didn't mention the spec of the cars, in general a Laguna would be higher spec than an Octavia unless its one of the Octavia models with full leather etc.

He bought the laguna today. There was actually a difference if 1K in the price. My mistake. But after bargaining on both the difference was only 500.

For a 2006 car the motor tax is based on engine capacity so the motor tax is exactly the same for a 1.6 petrol and a 1.6 diesel car. (€445)
A 2008 1.6 diesel would be much cheaper to tax than a 2006 1.6 petrol/diesel engine since the newer car would be based on CO2 emissions not engine capacity. Diesel engines tend to produce less CO2 emissions anyway.

    [Edit]
I now see you're comparing the 1.6 petrol Octavia with the 1.9 diesel Octavia; not the 1.6 petrol Octavia with the 1.6 Laguna as I originally thought.

Good choice imo, good luck to him.
