Independent Senator Ivor Callely has been fined €60 for holding a mobile phone while driving.

Mr Callely (52) denied the offence and said he was using a handsfree kit when the incident occurred last year.

Traffic Garda Keith Daly gave evidence of stopping Mr Callely’s blue 2002 Jaguar on Ballybough Road in Dublin on October 11th, 2010.

He said he saw Mr Callely holding a phone to his right ear and performed a u-turn and pulled the senator over at Summerhill Parade.

He told Dublin District Court that Mr Callely was at that stage using a handsfree device but the phone he had seen him using was lying on a passenger seat.

OK, so it's not what it should be, considering he has (allegedly) been fiddling his expenses for years... I can't believe he had the gall to actually try and deny.

He should have had his licence endorsed with 4 points and a doubling of the original fine, that's what Joe Soap would have received for going to court for a motoring offence and losing.

    Oct. 11th?

Ivor was in Cork pretending to be in Dublin that day.

    Must've got the wrong man.

Congrats Keith, you'll never make Sergeant now.
Poor Keith's probably being transferred to Skellig Micheal to guard the seagulls as we speak.

I saw this on the news.
He actually covered his face with a folder leaving the court just like your typical drug dealer or mugger ...

Don't worry Ivan, we know what you look like

yeah funny and he contested it - and stated that he doenst do an inventory on his post - in response as to why he didnt pay the fine initially.

tell ye, even Bertie would have to stand back and admire his balls

    You obviously don't...

And what difference does it make if he denied it? He is perfectly entitled to.

Unless your post is some sort of subtle humorous statement on the overly pervasive culture of entitlement and legal weaseling in Irish political life you might want to think about what you just said.

He was caught, yet still denied it, sounds like you saying he's entitled to lie in court?

He gave the Garda his address as one in Dublin!

Can we fine him for giving a false address too?

His word against the guard's, and he obviously believed that he was in the right. Just because he was involved in an expense scandal doesn't mean that he should lie down on a totally different issue.

That's a good question... does it make him a criminal? Would almost be worth trying to find out...
