    Dont know the fault code...

Warning light lit on dash... brought it to a garage. They cleaned it and the light went out for about 48 hrs

Any change to the performance? Any symptoms or just the light?

As far as I know some of the passats gave trouble with Fuel Pressure Sensors and they were coveres under warranty. Might be worth a phonecall to the main dealer and give them your reg,- they'll be able to tell you if theres a recall on your car.
Other than this, with no symptoms it could be absolutely anything and you really need to know the fault code to have a decent attempt at diagnosing the fault.
By the way I broke my bollox laughing at your username! :D

Fuel pump may be on the way out. Mine did excatly what your did 3 years ago. Check with VW to see if it was replaced on your vehicle.

Why was the egr cleaned? was it because of a fault code or just a whim?
The EML light came on so there is a fault(s) to give some indication of the problem.

The garage said the warning light came on because the EGR was dirty so they cleaned it and the light stayed off for about 2 days

Without having the exact fault code its really only guessing,
but the most common egr faults I see on these are due to split egr diaphragm, vac. pipe split or faulty vac. solenoid block.
You will need to get it read again, then post the code.

agree, this problem is not specific to the egr, my best is on a split vac pipe, take them off an inspect, the SMALLEST little nick is enough to get p0400 up on a code reader.

    I really appreciate the replies....

I dread going near my main agent as the last time I left in the Passat they put a guy on it who had limited ability as the main guy was off sick..

When the expert was put on it he found and repaired the problem in 1 hour BUT i was charged for all the time the other guy was using the diagnostics

Just my .0.2c but I had a similar issue with my EGR and gave it a clean. Error came back very soon again. When I took it apart for the 2nd time I noticed the solenoid was sticking and not operating as it should. A bit of kerosene cleaned it and loosened up the pin that operated the valve. No issue since.

€205 to get a new valve fitted in the local main agent. How does this sound ?

I suppose without knowing the fault code it's not easy to know for sure if this will solve my problem... BUT the guy who cleaned it originally is genuine and would have determined the fault from the diagnostics but is too far away to be running up and down to

I would ask the main agent to first, connect to the car and read the code to determine what the issue is. EGR error's are usually quite specific. Also with the computer connected a quick run in the car will show the %open the EGR is at. If you don't see this change under loading and unloading the engine you know thats where the issue is.

No point paying to a new part to find out it's a slit turbo pipe / vacuum pipe or something else.

€205 for the valve and fitting does sound reasonable all the same.

Hi i was just looking through some old Sligo posts about cheap diesel in Sligo and the possible side effects this was having on engines... ( according to recent press reports some of this diesel was very " Irish " )

I always bought my diesel there and am now wondering if it contributed to my ERG valve problems

Hard to know but if it's burning more smoky (from additives that they use to strip the colour) it'll be doing it no good at all.
