Underbody anti-rust stuff

Our new (to us) 2000 Almera has some underbody surface rust. Is there an inexpensive and easy to apply product I could use to stop it getting worse? I'd like to give the brake lines some protection too. I don't have use of a hoist, so I'd be grovelling under it with a brush, there will be no sand-blasting and minimal rust removal. Old engine oil used be recommended, I suppose Waxoyl is good, is there anything better and / or less costly?

There is little point applying anything until the surface rust is removed.

Also, if it is due an nct shortly I would be inclined to wait until after, if you have it applyed it may mean simple jobs get awkward with tryin to get the schultz off first

Sounds like a horrid job without a lift and using a brush. Have you any pics of the rust? If it is light surface rust it is normal on an 11 year old car and should not cause a problem for many years. So unless the car is cherished I'd be inclined to leave it and just keep the underside of the car relatively clean so that it and brake lines are not caked in salt/wet dirt etc.

PS any rust problem I've had with cars started within box sections, under seemingly intact underseal etc. IMO treating visible surface rust on the underside would not have really helped with this.
