UPC awful picture quality...

Just bought a 40" Sony LCD KDL40EX401 - and the tv is fantastic except for the picture quality in some of the UPC channels (and specific pro grammes) is awful. Really pixelated, as if you are watching it on youtube.

Could it be a cheap scart cable (that was just hanging out the back behind the tv for years) that is causing these issues? Would spending 15-20e on a good scart make any difference?

What about if I went for the HD box, just for the HDMI output. I know that 90% of the channels aren't HD but would the HDMI output improve the image?

Have you set the picture to RGB on the Setup screen? That's the first thing you need to check , then maybe if you're using a cheap SCART cable that the (analog) signals are getting messed up by local interference so a better quality cable might make a difference. However if the SCART cable is the problem then the sound quality and picture colour would probably also be affected, if pixelation is the only issue then it's probably not the SCART cable.

I have non-HD UPC and while the UTV picture is pretty poor, most of the other channels are excellent though I do notice the odd pixelation, this is because the signal I get from UPC is digitised so there is some element of compression being used.

I don't know if going HD will make any difference, in theory (open to correction here) the signal for all of the non-HD channels is the same so whether your box is HD or non-HD unless the HD box does some upscaling it shouldn't make any difference though it will solve any issues with the SCART cable because the signal being sent down the HDMI cable is digital so is not as prone to interference as a SCART cable.
