Physical assets that hold value

A recent slightly tongue in cheek discussion about default/leaving the Euro/ATM's not working threw the question "what asset to hold that may or may not appreciate/beat inflation/offer a safe haven in turbulent times?".

The main criteria required is that the asset has value and the ability to hold that value (market forces permitting), can be physically held (not certs) and can be converted to cash reasonably quickly/easily.

The most obvious answer seems to be gold or silver. Other suggestions included high quality watches (rolex or similar but market for items may be limited), fine wine (specialist knowledge required and not sure about how easily can be converted to cash), classic cars (large amount of capital required, storage and maintainance costs and may be difficult to convert to cash).

    Any other thoughts or suggestions

Property! Not necessarily Irish property though.

The white South Africans hold a lot of their money in diamonds, figures. I'm sure they have thought a lot about portable means of moving assets fast.

Personally I'd probably look at something with a long and relatively stable price history, e.g. farmland.

Stuff like wines etc are mainly collectibles and don't really have a monetary value outside of what someone is willing to pay. I'd avoid that (diamonds and gold for non industrial use would be included in this).

Silver is an interesting metal which has mainly industrial use, but you get hit for VAT in Ireland if you buy it.
