They're perfectly safe. Anyway, someone will always have a bike better than your own so I look at it that mine is way down on the list of coveted things in transition.

Depends... I've been to races that they are quite strict with getting your bike out afterwards, I've been to others that you could help yourself to a new bike easily. Much like parking my car.. I usually happy that somebody will steal a nicer bike over mine so unless you have a speed concept or p4 you should be fairly safe ;)

I would hope that it would be safe but you never know, its a Felt F75 that cost €1500, so dont fancy going home without that, either that or use me Giant mountainbike, but the latter option could leave my legs in a jelly-like state!

To be honest very few Irish races are secure in terms of transition. Some are but most aren't. Alot base their security on the fact they are small and bikes aren't in transition that long.

That being said I've never not done a race because it wasn't secure. However if I saw a nice P4 I might be tempted to upgrade.

(On a side note I can't believe the P4 kicked the race of the "super" bikes arses in wind tunnel tests)

He did ask how safe as opposed to secure, I think most participants are an honest bunch but it's true that there's not a lot of security, gaelforce was one of the few places where I had to prove the bike I was leaving with was mine.

I hope no scumbags are reading this. Its a heads up on how to rip off a bike.

Its something I always felt concerned about, tho last year my bike wasnt worth nicking. Doesnt sound like theft is a huge problem, anyone actually know of it happening?

It does happen. Heard a good few cases from UK and Ironmen races. Including pros bikes.

You could just stick a lock on it to be safe.

I have been to European races where they take a photo of you and your bike. Some races on entering and some on leaving and very rarely both. They only allow racers with race numbers into transition and then only after the last racer is finished.

In Ireland most races should only allow competitors into the transition area but being a ref I am constantly chasing people and their kids out of the transition area.

I would wonder how many bike thefts there are? I usually find a few wetsuits left behind and once a bike, which was forgotten.

Cool, I'll come to Limerick and upgrade, thanks.
Joke aside, i was wondering the same thing when i brought my my new bike to races. Though, when i saw the other bikes in the transition area, i realized mine was quite safe as there were a lot of bikes much much better than mine.
