Chaps calling to the door to buy car

Two gentlemen called to my door asking was I doing anything with my car. I said not really, might be selling it. they said no one would buy it and they'd give me 50 quid to take it away. I thought it was strange how they knew I wasnt using it.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is 50 quid a bit cheap for a 97 BMW? In fairness its not really running at the mo so its only good for parts i reckon...

Oh and hello, this is my first post...

I have met similar type of 'gentlemen' and again, amazed / shocked by their knowledge of an old vehicle i had. It was not visible to any passer by on the road so i made it obvious i was taking note of their own van reg number and asked how they knew about my car. They ignored my question and then asked if i had any old scrap, they would only charge a few euro per item or up to 250 euro for a full load of scrap, told them i prefered to ring the scrapyard in Oranmore direct, that they would call out to collect and actually pay me for the scrap. They were quite pissed off at that.

Whats wrong with the car: Starters gone - back door wont open - hand break is gone...

OP says 97 bmw, has to be worth at least 500 in my opinion, even with those slight problems

Indeed, one of the window regulators would be worth the guts of €50 :)

Be VERY careful, its quite possible that you'll come out some morning soon and the car will be gone.

They know the car is there the whole time, even when you're not and may think it's worth the chance.

It wouldn't take massive money to fix what's wrong, be a shame to scrap it.

thats the scam, scrap yards will give 150-200 euro for scrapped cars so these guys age going around offering to dispose of scrapped cars for people and making 100 + a go people think they will be charged by the scrap yards to dispose of them so they just let them rot

I think these fellas just have a look at the tax/insurance/nct and if they are out of date, they assume the car is not in everyday use, and chance their arm. Id say there are lots of cars left long term in driveways, that people will be glad to get rid of.

Similar happened about 5 years back at my parents house. My brother had bought a Corolla off my uncle as his first car - wasn't insured and was sitting outside the house.

Was an 87 car with only had 30k kilometers on the clock - developed an alarm fault while sitting there and wasn't driving. Someone came by offering to take it as scrap, needless to say he wasn't taken up on his offer, but we came back home after being in town on the following day and the car had been lifted.

TBH I'd move the car immediately and beef up the home security.

There can be a number of issues with this, one is they might sell it on as a ‘company’car to kids that joyride it and as the law sees it you are still the named owner on the book if they crash you could be held responsible. Also depending on age of car they can use the licence plates on another car bit unlikely but possible.

Number of legitimate guys in the phone book that will give you receipt and the fifty to take it away best to play safe or just get a buddy to tow it out to oranmore for you.

I manage a licenced Authorised Treatment Facility and these people are the bane of my existence. The only people who should take away any scrap car is someone with a waste collection permit, taking it to a premises with a valid waste facility permit. Only licenced premises can issue the Certificate of Destruction needed for the final owner to discharge their responsibilities under the law. The amount of enquiries we get every week from people who have received reminders from the tax office for cars that have been disposed of with these people is unreal. It says on the motor tax renewal form, you can only dispose of a car at an authorised treament facility, and it is only documentation from these premises that can deregister a car in ireland. The public are largely unaware of this but there are a number of ramifications. I have dealt with this issue extensively in my blog www.scrapmycar.ie/blog

Apologies for the moralising tone, but its gets exasperating. Giving your car to a man calling at the front door is a definate no no, you cannot vouch for what happens to the car in the future, and it will remain permanently registered in your name.

    Rant over, sorry.

And in reference to your initial enquiry, according to the End of Life Vehicle Regs the car is supposed to be delivered intact to the atf, this was largely because recycling rates have to be proven, and the car had to be intact because most premises had no way to weigh the car coming in. It was also to ensure that the hazardous chemicals contained therein were treated properly. This has proven an impractical law but it one we must try to adhere to as best we can, until the legislators get back to reality.

Greenermetals - What is the average paid for a car? (scrap metal + catalytic converter)
Both driving fine so can drop them to a proper facility.
Need to do a bit of a clean up before the place gets too "white trash" looking...

So the story so far.. The two gentlemen didnt call back (may have been the check point outside my estate :D ) I rang the scrap yard in Tuam Road and he offered €100 and he'd collect it- already doubling my previous offer.
Galway metal said they give €8 per ton with €5 off for every tyre on it.

Thinking of sticking it on DoneDeal and chance me arm there...

If somebody calls to your door asking is that car for sale its likely they have no interest in the car really and just want to see if theres anybody home before they break in. Theres a thread about this in the Dublin forum. If theres no car outside they will ask about a dog or look for directions etc.

Apologies, the 'initial enquiry' was actually on another thread, answered a question that wasnt asked.

lang dang, speaking for ourselves, we sell no parts and we strip all the recyclables from the car in a very labour intensive way. we achieve the required recycling rates but at a higher cost. This means the only thing we offer is a free collection service and to do all the paperwork for free. Whoever you bring the car to, just make sure that you get the CoD and that the site is licensed.

we had two pickup requests last week that when we went to lift had been stolen. This leaves the owner in an awkward position of not being able to prove that the car has been scrapped.

I worked in a yard just outside Newry a number of years back where a woman came in to see if her car had been taken in, some travellers had lifted it on the way in with other scrap, it only had the wing mirror knocked off the day before. The woman was phoned to say it was lifted but by the time she got in after it, it had already been lifted off with a grab. Immediate write off, she was crying and everything.

Thats still happening everyday in Dublin, I hear two or three instances of it every week
