I'v a mountain bike that has been left out my back garden for over a year. The chain/cog is fairly rusted and brakes seem a bit knackered. Does anyone know if I should try to get it repaired (not sure if its gone beyond repair) or would i be better off dumping it and getting a new one?

    Hi,

Anything is repairable. Its a much cooler idea to repair it if you like the bike.

There is a free bike workshop at seomra spraoi near Mountjoy Square every wednesday from 6-8. They will show you how to repair it if you dont know how.

wd40 frees up much rust and grit.

if you like the bike you could probably reinstate it with a minimal investment.
cables and a new chain might be all you need.

an old toothbrush makes a good cleaning implement.

You want to be careful with that stuff on a bike, it strips oil and grease off things, even things that need oil and grease.

My roadbike is over 20 yrs old, spent 10 yrs out the back garden. When I was getting it roadworthy again,I stripped and re-greased everything, fitted 2 new tyres, and its being going grand ever since. The down tube gear levers are so retro!!LOL

Yeah, the old chain is easily removed with an angle grinder! You'd be surprised what can be got going again with a little effort.
