    Hello,
I was wondering if somebody could tell me what the parking situation is like now in NUIG? I was a student there 5 years ago and it wasn't great, had to park in the temporary gravel carparks before 9am, wait up to 20 mins to get a spot, and display a parking permit..I will be returning in September and need to know how bad/good the situation is now!

well, since 5 years ago, we've built on most of the car parks on campus. There is now only very little segregated staff and student parking. People are instead incouraged to park in the new huge car park by Corrib village. There is a shuttle bus that runs from there at certain times fairly frequently.

I live closer to the uni than I could possibly park so there's no point for me.

Parking still hopeless. Wanna get here 8:10 at the latest to get a spot in front of kingfisher. After 10 there is no spaces even in corrib village. Get a bike dude!

Or you could do what every other person in college seems to do is park in front of my house.

In fairness, some of housing estates near by have space and without P&D AND closer to the college than the car park.

It's worse. I was also there 5 years ago so have seen what has happened since. They've taken away the two big carparks that were in St.Anthony's and built a new engineering building. The gravel is still gravel with no marked spaces but stricter clamping. essentially they've taken away ~300 spaces and replaced them with the park and ride. a 35min walk to campus. bus only goes certain hours and ive had to walk it more than once.

And worst of all? A permit will now cost u fifty quid.

It is a disaster. I have tried to comment on that at the office but got no attention. Students have only a few spaces to park where there are many free spots at the staff parking EVERY DAY!
There are five or so disable spaces in front of cairnes building.WHO DID THE MATHS?!
Nobody is putting any light into it.
They are charging people for the product which they can't supply!
let say there is a 300 student parking spaces on the campus i.e product, I wonder how many permits do they sell per year? I bet $1000 that it is more that that.
Is it legal to sell something that does not exist?
And dont try to park at any FREE AND REASONABLE space other that actual parking space. They will clamp you with no mercy within 30min!
So no point no fight the battle you can't win. Get a bike or a walk. That what I do.

Enough said! I'll be leaving the car at home and biking it come September. Thanks for the replies everyone. Out of interest, any bike sheds there now?

Smart decision. With the global oil prices taking out all time highs this year and clowns in our government taxing fuels and insurance companies even more, driving will be just too expensive anyway.
haven't seen any sheds but plenty space to lock the bike.
PS There are showers for bikers apparently.
    Good luck!

I'm not sure Staff parking is great either, saw a lecturer of mine getting her car in Corrib Village!
