Hi all, I'm after getting a car for free, but the person doesn't have the tax Registration Cert for it, or cannot find it at least. I was wondering how I go about registering the car in my name. I have the persons name and address, and the keys. Any help would be appreciated!

Thats what I asked, but he's in Galway most of the time and I'm in Dublin. So it's a little tricky. He mentioned that it is possible to do it without the book, and I figured someone here might know how.

Get him to request a new cert, and when it arrives in Galway he can post it to you in Dublin.

You'll be making this unnecessarily complicated for yourself otherwise.

Went to the motor tax office today, I got the one I was looking for. Basically it's a statutory declaration. I have to get it signed by a main dealer to confirm its the car I want the book for and by a peace/oath commissioner or notary public to make it legal, then send it away.

The reason why I wanted to do it this way was because the person who gave me the car, he's extremely busy (something about being a doctor, imagine that!) and he already went out of his way to give me a car for free. I didn't want to hassle him any further as he was doing me a favour.

    Anyways, thanks for your help!

Now to get the car ready to go across Europe. :D

Make sure you carry this reg cert with you at all times while driving outside Ireland.
