Battery thoughts

Battery died on a Dell Laptop after 12 months :(.
Bought new one on Ebay off a UK seller with good feedback.
Got it in the post but there's some sticky residue on the outside of the battery (packing was a Jiffy bag, Royal Mail so assume it was posted from UK).
I've tried to clear it off before putting the battery in but can't get rid of it all.
What should I do, use it or send it back?
