Only if it is a TI sanctioned race and you are not a TI member. Otherwise you don't .

Did this last year and loved the swim and run but the bike was a bit crazy and reg on the morning testing to say the least-on one's patients that is.

Looks like the reg problem has been sorted with it opening on the Tuesday before! So that's great. So now it all hinges on closed roads for the bike course if it is the sane route as last year. I had signed up for the tri in Carrick but that's been cancelled so if I hear that we have road closures ill be in portmarknock on May 15. Until then I'll just wait.

Thought it showed great potential last year as a really good race.

Same as OP. Not a TI member and tried to buy one day licence, but the race is not listed on the TI one day licence list of races.

The cycle route has changed from a poor one last year to a disastrous one this year if they don't get road closures. Most of it is on narrow, twisty roads with high hedges blocking the view on 3 x90 degree right hand bends. Cycling it on your own will cause the traffic to back up so how they think they can run a race on it is beyond me. At the very least surely it makes more sense to run it anti clockwise therefore changing the turns to left hand.

Of course IF they can get the roads closed that will solve it. It was rumoured last year that the road closures were only asked for the week before, so hopefully something has been learned from doing that.

The run seems to have been changed to mainly being on the beach, and the transition area moved. Unfortunately the great finish location on top of the dunes from last year has also been lost.

Is this race still going ahead? Entry seems to be unavailable on the runirleand site but it doesn't say 'race entry is closed'.

Their website was updated last week so I'd expect it to be going ahead...

Maybe due to safety concerns. I've emailed the organisers & asked them if they are still taking entries or transfers. If it's still going ahead but full I should get a reply.

They have at least changed the bike route direction so that 3 of the turns are left. The one right hand turn is on a mini roundabout.

run ireland . com have said the race cancelled and they were looking after entries :(
im sure we will get email from race director stating the same..... wonder why it was binned:confused: seemed to have the numbers

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,593 ✭✭✭PWEI

262 in the entry list so it had to be because of safety.
Wasn't there a number of bike crashes last year? I'd say myself they looked to get the roads closed & didn't get permission so decided to cancel the event.

The 2011 Velvet Strand Triathlon has had to be cancelled
An obstacle has arisen that can't be overcome before race day so unfortunately we have had to cancel completely the 2011 Velvet Strand Triathlon. With close to 350 entries, numbers were already up on last year and the buzz was really building, so we regret that we have to cancel the triathlon.

Full refunds will be issued to all competitors. This will be done through PayPal and will allow you to transfer your refund directly into your bank account, credit card account or PayPal account.

Click here to get your refund details sent to this email address or email velvetstrandtri@gmail.com with the word REFUND in the title from your preferred email address.PayPal will start issuing refund emails from tomorrow afternoon, tuesday the 13th of September. Why we are issuing refunds through PayPal:
• The vast majority of entries were processed over 30 days ago, so it won’t be possible to refund your credit card or laser card as your details are no longer stored on the online entry system with RunIreland.
• Paypal allows you to transfer the money directly into your bank a/c on your computer, so you won’t have to make the journey to your local bank to lodge a cheque.
• PayPal is an international payments company, which has the highest levels of data protection and anti-fraud systems, which ensures your security. This is much more secure that sending us your bank details and asking us to make the transfer manually.
If you have any queries or issues please do email us at velvetstrandtri@gmail.com and we'll sort them out as soon as possible.

Again we're sorry that this has arisen, but we have no other option but to cancel.

The Velvet Strand Team

I must have jinxed it! :pac:

Though I can't do it now anyway so I'm glad I get my money back. They were still taking entries last week - I emailed them weeks ago to ask of the roads would be closed and never got a response so I assume that was a no then...

This Tri was postponed earlier in the season a week or so before the event and now its been cancelled altogether 12 days before the event. People have kept up training schedules for this particular tri-I find the whole organisation or lack of as it seems in this case very unsatisfactory-it sounds from their email that something arose, which means that they didnt have forsight/forgot to get clearance or something. its a shame as portmarnock is a great place to have a race-IF its organised properly which it clearly hasnt been since the Velvet strand triathlon has come into being-sad really, especially for the hundred who paid and have trained for it. BAD FORM

It's been noticeable that there were quite a few triathlon and related events cancelled this year. The triathlon distance swims swims in Killiney planned for this Sunday by Tri Planet was another casualty with very little communication or explanation. The organisers deleted questions about it from their Facebook page which is never a good sign. They seemed to be a bit shoecked that cancelling an event would attract questions or criticism. Very amateurish all round IMO.

Emailed again, still no sign of the refund starting to
get a little peed off now.
