Reading on the other thread that some people are telling census enumerators to fùck off, will any of those people really be fined 25k or put in jail ?

    Yes. It has happened.

Has anyone ever had the TV licence people appear at their door? I've never had it happen and by the amount of times they claim they call out to houses, statistically I should have had them appear a couple of times by now, at least.

Be careful telling the census collectors (CACI International INC) to fock off...

Jail could be the least of your worries...

Just goes to show what a ridiculous world we live in. 25k in a recession when 1k would have just as much of an effect and a spell in prison with thieves, rapists and killers for not filling out your census. I despair.

How is it ridiculous? The Census is serious business and it really isn't much of a burden to fill it out.

I didn't say the census itself was ridiculous nor did I say it was anyway a burden. I was talking about the punishment fitting the offence. Yes by all means impose a fitting punishment but a custodial sentence?

Do you honestly agree sharing a jail cell with a hardened criminal is a fitting punishment just because you didn't fill out your census form?

3 times in different places. Every time I get Sky or UPC installed.

You are looking at the maximum sentence.

My friend got a fine in his door for a TV license, when they didn't have electricity or a TV even in the house. This was AFTER he had called to the door, and they told him that they didn't even have electricity yet. (House is only recently built).

    Some guff!

Our TV licence lapsed in June 2008 and the inspector called out to the house within a week of it lapsing
It was about 6 weeks after our house had gone up in flames (which is why we hadn't renewed it)and the TV unit was sitting in a skip outside the front door and the Fuse Box was still melted on the wall in the kitchen as we hadn't gotten as far as the kitchen yet in our clearout
No fuse box = no electricity obviously enough

    Explained this to said inspector
And got a summons shortly thereafter!

    Muppets

Ah but they are maximum punishments, they're not going to be typical for people who don't fill in their census forms.

the census want us all to be good citizens and fill in their form
however should you fail, they threaten ,fines, jail etc
you see its the eating and drinking for a big quango the CSO
to keep them in their well paid usless jobs for the next 4 yrs
not surprising they have teamed up with CACI [torture inc]
just shows the calibre of management in the CSO
they dont mind who they do business with or their past history
    its all down to economics
just smile hand them back their form and tell them you will be out of the country on census night

The inspectors don't call to addresses that are listed as having licences.

I haven't got a census form yet - never there when the enumerators are around, and the form won't fit in my letterbox. Anyone know is there an alternative means of acquiring a form?

your enumerator should have left you a calling card with a proposed delivery time by now. if you don't get one in the next few days, you could ring the census helpline 1890 201111

What is the main information they seek to collect in a census, which they do not already have?

Is it more a case that, because of the segregation of our public services and data protection and so on, that they don't actually have access to most of this info?

can everyone not just find a hill, and get over it.
it's one form once every 5 years ffs, is it really worth getting fined over?
there are plenty of better ways to "stick it to the man"

As another poster said, it's when you don't have a licence that you meet them. I was on an apartment before where there was a telly but we never used it and had no cable contract. Inspector showed up and I pretty much had an argument with him at the door but afterwards thought better of it and bought a licence before he had a chance to bring it further.

Irish people tend to hate being put out and especially being told what to do.
Its almost fuss-free to complete a census form and would take no more than 10 minutes.

Agree with you about the bully tactics all right jakdelad, but it's anonymous, so hardly a breach of privacy.

Thanks a mil Velvet shank - damn, the card could have been left all right and I could have thrown it out with junkmail... :(

Re the TV licence: you're supposed to have one, so the licence inspector isn't doing anything wrong by sussing out whether you do or not. They're not door-to-door salespeople. If you can get away with it, great, but once you get caught, you don't have grounds for refusing to pay it when you have a TV. Sure, you might complain about the amount/what it's paying or not paying for, but not paying it won't change those facts and will only leave you more out of pocket in the end.

Its imperative to assist in future planning and an accurate record of the country and its inhabitants @ this particular point in time.
Have you ever looked back at your ancestors census forms? Its part of current history. Who exactly do you think has access to your information?
What do you think they'll do with it?

where and how far will the questioning go

perhaps you should educate yourself as to what the Census entails before keyboard warrioring about
well paid usless jobs for the next 4 yrs

    which is wrong btw:rolleyes:

    or drivel such as
    torture inc
    .

You have no idea what you're talking about, no sense of what the census entails, what forms need to be filled in, or indeed the content of said forms.

maybe if you offered an organised, coherent arguement , your post would be appreciated.

I also fail to see what purpose your PM to me earlier was

    Hello back.
What religion you may or may not be part of are can be found out easily enough by record. Almost as easily as finding out how many cars you have registered in your name.

Not very far. The questions are plain and simple. Nothing hidden. Do you notice many changes on the previous census'?

Sweet christ, the CSO and the Census document the state of the country in its current position,
    How many live in houses,apartments?
    how many drive,cycle,walk to work.
    how many work
how many men women, children are in the state, their nationalities, diversity, ethnicity.,maritial status, education, emmigration.
    Population,growing?..or not..?

they're not responsible for our current predicament, they docuement it as evidence for future generations. i'm unsure as to whether or not you're troilling...are you?

Also everyone must fill in the Census- its the Law. Break laws much?
It captures the underlying changes in society and no other report gives us a better glimpse of what the future might be like.

in 2006 Ireland took in more immigrants per head than any other EU country and this includes the UK and Sweden – the only two other EU countries with an open borders policy to the new eastern states of the Union.Ireland also apsorbed migrants per head than the US. If the US were to match the per capita Irish figures, it would have taken in close to 15 million people in the previous two years – twice the population of New York... i wonder what the census will reveal this time round?

    Tbh you haven't a clue, i won't bother explaining in future.

if over a thousand dont or fill in the census form wrong
by definition the whole thing is meaningless

give it to the CSO quango as redundancy payments

Jakdelad, if a person fills the census, it doesn't make them a meek, compliant little citizen, and refusing to fill it doesn't make a person a totally out-there rebel. You're not being that anti establishment really - plenty of teenagers and whatnot complain about "the man".
