ok , i use the internet quite a bit and keep thee odd file but nothing else apart from that , i dont download music or videos , i dont play computer games either for that matter , so perhaps a quite basic laptop would suffice , DELL seems to be the pick of the bunch but i see ACER in a good few places and they are a good bit cheaper

    my questions are

    1. if i were to buy an acer for the above needs , which is a reasonably priced good model

    2. is the ACER ok or is thier something in between it and the DELL

    thanks

I find dell to be very good if you run into any problems. Great after care in my experience. Try to have 3 gig ram installed. Min of 2 needed to run windows 7.

Asus and Toshiba are the "best" at the minute but I don't pass much remarks on brand, nothing wrong with Acer, look for a review on what your thinking about getting.

Does screen size matter to you? Will you want to connect it to a TV? Is battery important?

This is a great one from bargain alerts the other day. €460 delivered, how much do you want to spend?

Here's one on Argos that would probably do you at €380, good reviews. Only 60 euro in the difference in these two though.

As brian said, go for 3GB RAM at least, the last thing you want is to have to wait for it to do something when you open 2 or 3 programs together.

This is a good site for comparing Processors if you go for one of the lesser ones.

The other thing I would take into consideration is where you will be buying the laptop and what sort of after sales service they offer.

Dell will offer a collect and return or on-site option but if you encounter any problems this will necessitate you taking time off work if you work a 9 to 5. If you buy from a local shop they may not have the parts in stock to repair your laptop immediately if it you encounter hardware problems but you may find it easier to get simple problems resolved by just calling in if something goes wrong.

As for buying from eBay, online resellers etc. You may pick up some great bargains but pay attention to the small print. If you encounter any problems you may need to ship the laptop back to them at your expense.
