    Hi All,

    Just a quick question.

The boiler flow value with the thermostat thats going into my hot water tank has packed up.

Does anyone know how much a new value is and how much it would be to have someone fix it.

    The value make is Myson.

Forgive me for asking, but how do you know it's packed up?.

I would first try remove the TRV head (just unscrew it by hand). This will allow the valve to fully open (it's spring open). With the boiler on see if you are getting hot water through the valve (just feel upstream and downstream). Then press down the 'tit' on top of the valve, and keep it down. This will close the valve. So you should have not hot water passing through the valve. If the valve appears to be working then you just have to screw on a replacement head (approx 15 euros). No plumber required.

There isn't much to the TRV. Two separate components, the head which contains a special wax that expands as it heats, and the valve which is spring open.

if you ask me thats a stupid plumbing practice.i just put a 3/4 inch 367 on the return,,,,,,,,,,,,,putting trvs is a daft idea,,,the price of it,,,,,,,,,,,,,if it was a motorized valve you wouldnt mind,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i suppose if you have no 367 and you have one of those its hard not to stick on:D

Sorry about the lack of detail. Had a lad out last night to have a look at it. The value has definitely packed in and needs a new one. He quoted me a price, but I'm just wondering how much the value and labour would cost, just in case I'm getting ripped off.

labour would near enough right id say,,,not sure how much them valves are put 50 seems too high,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,its hard to get a plumber to come and just do the smallest 10minute jhob for less than 100 euro but thats there rates,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,50 seems to much for a valve,,,,,,id be thinking more like 15-20,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

if you had a mate as a plumber or a mate of yours that does know one you probably could get it done,,,im a plumber here in mayo and that here id charge probably 50-60 for the lot inc valve

Forgive me for asking what seems obvious but why not just go into a plumbers providers and by a TCV Head for a myson valve.

Seems to me to be the easiest option.

I wouldnt be happy doing something like this myself, just in case I ended up flooding the place.

Got a friend of a friend thats a plumber to do it for me. He came out Wednesday night to take a look at it, picked up the part yesterday and came this morning to fix it.

He said he thought the part would have been around €20 but turns out it was €50. Not his fault I guess. I suppose for having him come out Wednesday night to take a look, getting the part and then coming to fix it early on the Saturday morning, €150 wasnt to bad a price. Only took half an hour to do

How much in your opinion is a TCV? Because i sold them 2 years ago for 35+ Vat and I was not expensive.

You do need a tcv for this job and not 367's. The poster did not say he wanted other options he wanted a price to replace the TCV.

A cheaper option would have been to buy a new tcv head however all shops dont do these and the plumber may have bought the whole valve or it might have been the valve that went.

I know the job is done but this was good advice which was not taken : the OP does not know which bit went and why so nothing learned as to if there is crap in the pipes etc

Out of curiosity...Why? Its not a TRV but a TCV which works differently. If there was crap in the pipes at this stage it would clog up the heat exchanger on the boiler as this is the main feed.

You don't know till you look, either the probe on the head was defective or the body was defective, sludge would be the main reason for the body to get gummed up and replacing the body only puts the problem off for a time.
