It's the quickest way if you want your disc asap but there are other options:
    1) get renewal form RF100b from any Garda station, public library or motor tax office and send your renewal by post
    2) ring up the HQ in Shannon and ask them to post out a renewal PIN to you and do it online.

In the meantime you'll be legally untaxed and at risk of a fine if a parking warden sees it parked in a public place or you give a Garda enough backchat. :)

    Why?
You don't need the log book to tax a car. All you need are details which you already have... make/model, colour, chassis number and registration number.

    Really?! Oh crap!

Don't panic about it. Your tax only expired 2 days ago so you'd have to be very very unfortunate to get hauled over the coals for it. Most gardai would likely just give you a gentle reminder unless you've done something else far more serious.
Just don't leave it parked anywhere a traffic warden patrols 'cos those guys don't engage in chit chat.

I bought a car last month. I then received the logbook and a motortax renewal separately within a few days. This had the pin on it to renew online, which I did.

So will they send it out to me?

You wont have a problem there is a grace period of about 20 days anyways. :D

You can be fined once its out. This stuff is being tightened up all the time. A few years ago, most people used to leave tax til near end of next month just out of laziness I guess. Thats not happening so much now.

Is the pin not just the last few numbers of your chassis number? can't remember if it is 5 or 6 numbers long.

It's worth a try?. The car is now registered against the OP's name and address so it might work, although it might not if it was already sent to the previous owner.

I hope that grin is there to indicate satire otherwise what is this fictional 20 day grace period to refer to?
Once your tax has expired you are not permitted to use the car in a public place (even if it is privately owned property). In practice you'll probably get away with it for a few weeks, just don't be too shocked if you don't.

That's only for first time registrations, it doesn't work that way for renewals.
