On both my TV's it takes about 30 sec. to 1min. for main index to load, also another 30sec. to 1min. for each page ie News/Sport/Entainment. This compered to fast text on analog which is instant, is a step back just for the sake of having the channell displayed in a window.

Some TVs appear to slower to load MHEG-5 applications than others, Walker for example.

Yeah, I still find Fastext superior to "digital text"

If I wanted something more graphical than basic fastext, I'd just use the internet!

I can see how MHEG5 text would suit commercial broadcasters as it allows more graphical adverts.

    Thanks for the reply.

My main TV is a 47in. Philips 3000 series, the other is 32in. Silvercrest both set to regine Ireland. I have tried both sets with setting for UK and still slow to load. I understand that digital has advantages over analoge ie: interactive red button and possible iPlayer if it comes on line from RTE, but if digital why not faster access.

MHEG5 isn't slow, it's the processor in the TV.

I had an low priced 32inch LG and it was very slow in MHEG5 teletext, compared to my Samsung c750 which renders it very fast.

Agree. I have a Samsung LE46652 and the digital text is brilliant and very fast.

same here on a Walker 32 inch very slow response time for mheg5 text, not happy with the response time 1 min to load every page

As with everything in 'tech land' you gets what you pays for! If Walker et al fitted higher quality processors in their sets, then they would cost as much as the 'bigger' brands. Not everyone can afford to buy a Ferrari, so they make do with a Toyota, or Peugeot, or a Nissan or whatever.

I have the metronic freeview hd zapbox and it deals with mheg5 digital text on BBC no problem but when i try the digital text on RTE 2 it takes noticeably longer to load ... what could be causing this ??? I doubt it's the processor if it works fine for the BBC's mheg 5 services

I have a Sony, its very slow at responding to everything, the fancy teletext is a chore to be honest, its so irresponsive on my TV.

I disagree it is the processor, as it works fine with BBC MHEG5 and loads instantly. Will it improve when RTE do the final switch over?

Nothing to do with the broadcast stream. My Sony TV renders the MHEG data quickly. Unlikely RTENL will be doing anything which would speed up the MHEG data in the short-term.

ps nolnah - you need to leave the quote tags in when quoting a prior posting, otherwise it's difficult to read;)

IT IS the processor! Combined with software engine built into the TVs firmware! Have you looked to see if a more up to date firmware is available ?

Sice the advent of broadband, even the internet, teletext services have become more and more irrelevent....

MHEG5 is not just about teletext though, and even still it is distributed via a broadcast platform which is freely available (no paying for an ISP).

Beyond providing a teletext-like environment, in the UK it has also been used to show BBC News multiscreen services (it was a stripped down service compared to satellite), interactive services (including alternative commentary at sports events) and primitive encryption (TVX, RedHot and Babestation use this). It could also be used to display an EPG which can be overlaid on the current programme you're watching.

As for the speed of MHEG services on Saorview, the first Freeview STB's were a bit slow dealing with MHEG but as time has gone on and receiver specs have got better, access has became significantly quicker to the point of near instance. For two different receivers, the Sagem Picnic box runs Saorview MHEG at around the same speed for BBC Red Button services i.e. both are fairly quick. However with the Metronic Zapbox, the BBC RB services are quick but RTÉ Aertel MHEG reminds me trying to use BBCi (as it was then) on a Panasonic TUCT-20 STB back in 2003/04. I suspect that either the Metronic receiver and several others like it have problems dealing with non-UK MHEG5 services for some reason, or RTÉ are testing using a slight variant of the MHEG5 profile from that of the UK which is upsetting some receivers.

I'm not particularly concerned with MHEG5 myself, although I am interested to see how it's going to develop. For what it's worth though, I have a Windows 7 Media Center with a Hauppauge HVR4000 tuner card, and digital text pages load instantly. I haven't noticed any delay on the LG LF7700 TV either. I wasn't aware that this was an issue.
