Anyone know how to tell if the headgasket is gone on a 96 polo 1.4 petrol.
It is overheating and yes there is water in it. I had it running for a while and the heater was mad hot but the bottom pipe on the radiator was still cold. Any ideas whats wrong? It has 106000 miles on it but otherwise in good shape,

Your thermostat has failed closed. Replace it. Nice and easy.

The temp light on the dash keeps flashing now even though it is not overheating, plenty of water in it and the cooling fan comes on and off like it should, any ideas

It could be air locked? Is there anywhere to bleed out any air? Keep an eye on your coolant level, is there hot air in the car?

Give the pipes going to the radiator a good few squeezes and see if it gets some air into the header tank. Always gets some out for me.

yes there is hot air in the car and all seems to be ok now.
I disconnected the connection to the sensor on the top of the coolant bottle and reconnected it again, the flashing light is now gone , fingers crossed :)thanks
