Sky Plus Box

I'm not one bit technical minded, so if you could help me i would appreciate it.

My father has a FTA dish and box at home. I was telling him about the Sky plus box and how he should get one to be able to record programmes, pause tv and so on.
I picked one up over on adverts for him but when i connected it up the info on the screen said it was updating the software and would take 10 mins. Over an hour later and nothing changed.

I brought it down to my house where i have sky multiroom installed. Now the thing is that the phoneline has been cut by Eircom so i was wondering how can i get this box updated now without having to contact Sky directly as i don't want them to figure out that i have no phone line.

    Any suggestions would be great,
    cheers

Have you tried a forced update ?

To perform a forced download, follow these steps
    1. Press and hold the back up button on the receiver (not the one on the handset)
    2. While holding down the back up button, switch the receiver off at the mains, then back on again.
    3. After about 10 to 20 seconds all the lights on the front of the receiver will come on. You can now release the back up button.

Trying that now. Will let you know.
    One other question?
Will i need to put one of my Sky cards into this box for that to work?

Done that but it went back to the original message "For your information, Updating software, This could take up to 10 minutes, Do not switch off your sky+ hd box during this time"

AFAIK a viewing card has to be inserted.

You will need to pay a Sky sub or it won't record.
What you need for sub free recording is a Freesat+ box.

No need for a viewing card to update the software, you could run into problems if you have a bad signal. That could be what's causing the issue with the update.

The op stated that the box was bought on Adverts.ie, for Sky+ to work you need to subscribe to Sky and get a viewing card-it probably would have been cheaper to go direct to Sky,new customers get installed for €30.You also need two cables connected to the box for full functionality.
It will work with one cable but that's a bit pointless as you can only record what you look at.
