2011 forecast contest annual scoring table

Right then, time to start up this lovely thread as we have three months of scoring data, much of it accurate. :cool:

Until end of August, contestants will be listed by total score. After August, the list will change to best 8/9, 9/10, 9/11 then 10/12 as we close in on the annual scoring leader. At that point, rankings will be shown for total annual score and average (at least half of months entered). For now, the higher averages are just there to add a few cheap thrills.

If you've missed one or two, your lower position in the current table may not really indicate where you stand, it's the average that counts especially as we get closer to the end of the year.

Notes -- as discussed in the April thread, the IMT forecasts fell slightly below the minimum scoring rule progression and in most cases are 1-2 higher than raw scores. Otherwise the minimum progression worked out and no other scores were adjusted. The bonus was scored 10 for two closest, 9 for all at zero, and by a sliding scale 8 to 1 points for guesses between 0.7 and 3.0 mms.

Congrats to Mickger844posts for having the longest name and the biggest score, and Joe Public for a gutsy effort (in a record warm month), some other guy, and Fizzycyst honourable mention all round. Some people did quite well on all but the IMT and got themselves a healthy total despite being blanked in the 25% of points in column A.

This month, I have dropped any one-time contest entrants from Jan to Mar, but if any of them resume activity later this year they may reappear in the table then. I have also dropped Jan-Feb entrants only, if they did not enter the May contest (so far). So here we go with the updated April totals and the averages which may be out of step here and there for those who have not entered every month. The numbers in brackets after the averages are the rankings of averages rather than totals (totals are used to generate the rank in the first column).

* Max temperature was scored by rank due to the "equitable scoring rule" or mercy rule ... some bonus question scores were reduced by 2 pts as per the rules for late entries (see post #1 of May thread).

Quite a few people moved up this month, while a few dropped a few places. So the race is generally tightening up.

It's your "average" rank (on the right) which really tells you where you stand for the main contest (in which best 10 of 12 scores count). The rank for total only applies to those who have entered all months for comparison.

Congrats to Mickger844posts and Nilhg who continue to set the pace. 200motels has moved back into third, "Mindgame" is a solid fourth by average.

Check your score, the total and the average and let me know if you find any errors. I have checked it over once.

The only reason i did better last month was we lost so many other competitors. We've gone from 53 entries in Jan to 39 now.

2 people are on their last life and 5 people have struck out once. It'll be intestesting to see how many actually finish for the year. Is it possible that i'll come in the top 10 by default

This happens each year but the trend has been upward in terms of the number of regular contest entrants, it seems to me that we had about 12 to 15 regulars in 2009. Sometimes people come back in after a few months and get added back into this table when they have 50% of the months covered, that's the minimum for being included for percentage ranking. But as you say, anyone who misses two months then has no "outs" in the main contest and has to go with all of their scores. That makes it tough because we all seem to manage one or two bad months.

I really enjoy this competition it's a bit of fun, but I really appreciate the work MT and one or two others put into it. Only for them we wouldn't have this competition. Well done lads.

Note that scores for IMT were adjusted upward for most of the scoring part of the field to keep pace with minimum scoring progression. This became unnecessary towards the lower part of the field in scoring range. Scores for minimum temperature and precipitation were adjusted more comprehensively to keep pace with minimum scoring progression. The bonus question was scored (as explained in rules) seven points for sunshine hours and three points for the station selected. Any prediction of 7.0 hours or more was scored one point, then that increased for each hour predicted. The location points were 3 for Belmullet, 2 for Valentia and 1 for Shannon.

In general, this was a low-scoring month, Con Sensus had one of his/her lowest scores I can recall (26) and anyone looking for a warm, dry month basically got shut out of the points. Congrats to Su Campu, who led with 58 points, DOCARCH, Deep Easterly, John Mac and the rest of the folks who managed to break 40 on this difficult scoring challenge.

At the half-way point, the lead keeps changing and a large pack is just behind the two front runners in the annual total (MTC award) part of the contest. The average scores reveal that one or two contestants who have missed a month or two are well placed for the main title (Boards award) which takes in your best ten out of twelve scores.

The June summary is now readable and from that I discovered that the actual sunshine value was 117%. This means most of the June scores are off by 1 or 2 for all contestants in a random pattern that depends on whether you predicted more or less than that amount of sunshine. The following update fixes the scores for June in the annual table and requires one or two changes in the rankings.

One late entry (Sponge Bob) suffered the rare fate of a 10% points reduction from 68 to 61 points. The late late entry of SeaFields had a reduction on the bonus question and a further reduction for points over 50 (from 53 to 50).

The "mercy rule" was only needed for the lower portion of the maximum temperature forecasts, oddly the four highest scores there were okay but then there was quite a drop to the next few. Scores that were adjusted up by a few points are marked * ... and in general, the scores for July are higher than most months, Con Sensus is relatively high and plenty of people will move up in the annual scoring which will be posted soon (about 8 pm).

A new category (the best ten out of twelve scores will count for the main award at the end of the year) has been added as we move towards the final stages of the annual contest. This new category shows your total score minus the lowest monthly scores, if you've played all months you drop two, if you've missed one month, you drop your lowest score -- and if you've missed two months you have to use all your scores. Sorry but those who joined later and have missed three or more are ineligible and are not ranked. This final score is in bold and ranks are indicated. The rank order still depends on total score for the year, but I plan to move to the main contest ranking next month.

Ranking now based on main contest (Boards.ie Award) which considers your best ten out of twelve at end of year. Towards that end result, we now take all but two of your scores (listed at end of your scoring), or for those who have missed one month, all but one, and for a couple who have missed two, your raw total. Meanwhile, that total which is the basis of the second award (the MTC award) now appears with its own ranking. The averages are still listed with a ranking for comparison with any less frequent entrants who are listed at the end of the table (their rank shown as "xx" since they are not in the main contest). D_Niall average treated as approximate, as will any other intermittent players added later (main table ranks not affected, ch-etc is ranked in main table).

Due to this re-ordering, "Mindgame" (sp?) has moved well up the table due to a good showing on 7/9 months entered. Almost everyone has been jostled around a bit in this new order and with three months to go, there could be a lot more movement ahead.

The ranking for Con Sensus is correct for them but for anyone lower, that rank is ignored in the tables, so we just get an idea of what a consensus score looks like in the rankings.

+ (bonus) ... these bonus scores are provisional and so the totals are also subject to change. The scores were generated from the assumption that the first snowfall will fall in the consensus period 27-29 Nov for max points. Groups of roughly equal errors on either side of that scored lower as you move further away from those dates. The + entries are later than 29 Nov and therefore would be scored higher eventually if snow doesn't fall in November before the end of month. You'll see how it works, if we get an earlier snowfall some of the scores will be adjusted up and all the + scores will go down somewhat. Don't worry if I made any errors here, I will score these from the original table when the actual date is known, comparing with this list.

With the scores being provisional and subject to change, I neglected to offer congratulations to the October leaders, but by the looks of the current weather pattern, the bonus scores can't change too much now except for the growing possibility of the + marked scores increasing. So at this point I feel somewhat safer in congratulating redsunset and DOCARCH for leading the way. If there's a really late onset of snowfall, Redsunset could improve his score by as much as 9.

Meanwhile in the annual race, nilhg has opened up a slightly larger lead, and the two closest chasers (kindred spirit and Deep Easterly) have fairly similar snowfall date predictions in the balance ... all three of them can only see slight changes in their scores no matter where the ball drops on that. I just added okla to the annual table for reaching the baseline of four forecasts. Can't edit the table, but will read (for last four months with October provisional) ... 56 . 23. 45. 44 .. 168 .. (42.0) which would rank 18th and drop everyone below that by one. Other regular newcomers will be added to the final standings if they reach four entries. Octo is currently running ahead of our table leader in his first two entries.

By the way, if nilhg reads this, how do you say your username in your own mind? I say it "nil - h - g" but perhaps it is nil-mercury?

If it doesn't snow all through November, then this October bonus will remain a factor, but hopefully (from my point of view) it will snow on 28 November and I can just keep all these scores.

Hi Mt was just checking how i was doing in the comp and i noticed a mistake in that for october i scored 47 yet according to the updated annual scoring i only got 22 for october.

Sorry about that, I am now going to check every score because this is the second one ... the other one was the reverse (scored 22, got 47) so I'm hoping I just mixed you two up. I do tend to double-check so must have missed that step. Glad you spotted it. I can't edit that table now so I will double-check later and reproduce the table without errors. Gives me a chance to add okla.

Knock and Belmullet have reported snow as of 4 December. There may have been earlier falls unreported at Knock but in any case, I am now going to settle up the snowfall bonus that is part of the October score. Basically, your October score may change by 1-2 points as the provisional score was based on a fairly close consensus date (28 Nov). The following chart is now the revised annual scoring race with updated October scores. Very few changes in ranking will result.

Scores were exceptionally high for December, Con Sensus had a new personal best of 83 which only Strasser (88) and Tae Laidir (84) could top, then we have DOCARCH at 80 and eventual annual contest winner Nilhg at 79 which was excellent considering the circumstances (I will confirm this in a while). Plenty of other meaty performances and a few penalties had to be applied which is unusual too.

Check out this thread at about 8 p.m., I should have the annual numbers worked out by then.

And just a reminder, you can still enter January 2012, the deadlines were relaxed by one day because of the New Years holiday.
