Twelve string guitar

About nine or ten years ago I bought a Tanglewood acoustic twelve string. I love the sound of it but I find it incredibly difficult to play. I once managed to get a set of gauge nine strings from the music shop here and this helped a lot. I was able to play the guitar for an hour or more before my fingers started hurting. The next time I went to change the strings though all I could get were gauge ten strings. That was about five years ago and I've rarely played the guitar since. After about five minutes of playing my fingers kill me so it's pointless to even try. Even tuning the guitar down a tone doesn't help much.

I've just gotten two sets of gauge nine strings that I ordered online, but stupidly I purchased electric strings (the packet didn't say 'electric' but I should have noticed they were nickel strings). I have put electric strings on the guitar before and the unwound G string caused a problem as the acoustic nut is designed for a wound string.

I'm just curious if anyone else plays twelve string guitar and if they have problems playing it or getting strings.

Strings.ie are a great place to get strings from, you have to pay a bit for delivery but it's not crazy and they have really good service. http://strings.ie/products/Dean-Markley-2202-Vintage-Bronze-12-String-%289%252d46%29.html There's some 9's for 12 string acoustic. If they don't have what you want you can ask them to order it in for you.
I've only really played some 12 string in the last 2 months, I borrowed one from a friend. They take a bit of getting used to and I find it near impossible to play intricate stuff on it but it sounds lovely on chordal stuff. I find it hard to play it for longer than a few minutes, and that's after years of playing basses, wide 7 string necks and horrible cheap acoustics.
