Pricing and flexibility - don't people understand?

I sold my MINI for less than I advertised it for. I expected it to happen, so I took the price to import a car with the most similar spec and mileage from the UK, priced mine a little bit above that to give me some wiggle room, and it was gone in 2 weeks after advertising it. I was prepared to sell my car for what someone could bring one in for from England, but mine was a much higher spec.

I'm currently looking at importing again, and I've identified what the car I'm interested in buying sells for in the UK. I've found only 2 similar cars in Ireland, one's about 2k more than it needs to be selling for, and one's 4k. I've chatted to both owners, and neither is willing to move on their price despite showing them the figures on importing.

I'd much rather buy locally - but it's proving to be impossible, and it's disappointing to have to send my money abroad.

Agreed, and it's the reason we're so fcuked. People just wont lower prices, yet are stunned when everyone imports for cheaper.

Consider that someone up the food chain will be buying a new car here to replace the one you are buying and the bulk of this minus the VRT will be going abroad I wouldn't worry too much about it. After all your VRT cash will be coming from the import you bring in and there will be cash staying in the country when it's sold again.

For every shrewd lad like you out there they are reckoning there is someone out there who will meet their price or come close to it, can't blame them for holding out really if that's their view.

    +1

Either that, or people are putting up their asking price based on the average carzone dealer prices minus a bit. That was fine a few years ago, but "average" now needs to be "lowest" and "a bit" now needs to be "a lot"

It's of little consolation but don't forget when you buy a new car, a portion of dealer charges and the VAT on the car+dealer will stay here too, so in effect about 30% of the cost of a new car remains in this economy.

When I rang the UK garage about my E38, we agreed on a 8% discount and £50 of petrol over the phone and I had it 5 days later. When I arrived over, he had replaced both of the front tyres, granted they weren't high end but still £100 a least per corner, had the HPI check printed out and all other documents and I was out the door in 30 minutes.

When my mate got his E39 a few weeks back from an Irish dealer, he got frig all off the price, wouldn't put a drop in the tank and one of the rear tyres was dangerously worn, and ended up putting a "part worn" (heavily worn) tyre on in its place (wasn't even the proper size).

Personally, I can't wait to buy from the UK again.
