Save money on the ferries to France

I was looking at ferry prices to France at the start of July recently - it was looking at being about €1,300-€1,500 return for a family of 4.

However, if I take the car by myself I can get it for €558 return. Mrs Zag and the mini-zags can fly to Paris for €190 and get a train to meet me down south for €110, and then fly home from down south for ~€250.

So, we save €300-€500, they avoid the long drive, they get to see Paris for a day on the way, we get more time on the entire holiday, and I get to drive home without shouts of "are we there yet ?", "I need to go for a wee", "tell him to stop hitting me" for the best part of 1,000kms, etc . . .

Incidentally, the flights with Aer Lingus are cheaper than the Ryanair ones at this stage. Ryanair might subsequently discount them. This is the first time in a while that I've found Aer Lingus to be better value.

I wonder why this didn't occur to me before ?

We went to France 2 years ago for 10 days over summer and looked into the ferry option. It was about €1000 for 2 adults and a child. It was about half that to fly and rent a car, and as you say, avoid all the hassle of the extra travelling. I sent an email to the ferry company to point this out, but funnily enough, never got a reply. Still, it must make sense for some, or the ferry companies wouldn't be charging those sorts of amounts.

Aer Lingus can be cheaper than Ryanair; if it makes more sense, take it while you can.

Yup, its true. Ryanair are not a discount airline anymore.. they are an airline that offers discounts to certain locations (these are usually a million miles from anywhere relevant which no one but the people who're from there fly to!!!)

I'm flying to Croatia in August and Ryanair are over double the price that Aer Lingus are, one is going to Zadar and the other is to Dubrovnik.. so they arent always cheaper.. :)

I'd defo do the driving thing on my own, throw all the bags into the boot, some decent road tunes, shades and off ya go.. :D

Oh and also check out aferry.co.uk, you might get a decent discount on the ferry prices too.. treat yerself to a nice steak dinner and a few beers on the boat ;)
