need help-re license plate of car reg details

    Basically some wanker bumped right into my car while driving-i got out of my car to complain and get his insurance details but then right away the twat drove right off!! i did get a snapshot of his license plate with my iphone- can i track him down with this?

    If you have his registration than yes the gardai will have his reg and all his details on their pulse system, once you have the reg and once he is the registered owner all will be ok.

    Fair enough - thanks for researching it. Strange, I once cycled through the side window of a car which did a u turn into my path without warning, and reported it to the gardai to cover my butt in case the car driver decided to pursue me for the damage. The guard clearly and repeatedly told me he didn't want to know, because the gardai had not attended the scene of the accident. Had to really coax him into taking my statement. I guess this is one of those laws which is not enforced too rigorously. Which is understandable, I imagine huge numbers of incidents are minor, are treated as civil and never involve the gardai. If you were to follow the letter of the law, you'd have to report nearly every dent, scratch, broken tail light, wing mirror, etc to the Gardai which isn't exactly practical.

    Its taken very seriously if there is a major impact or injury - there are mandatory disqualifications for two of four offences under that section (don't worry you're fine).

    Otherwise, yeah, these things happen.

    Under EU law(AFAIK)... the motorist is automatically liable in this situation or rather... the cyclist is automatically covered by the motorists insurance.
