Instead of getting sky+ I'd like to get a DVD recorder so I would have a hard copy of what I record.
I remember reading about a recorder that would record when you use the "switch to program reminder" on sky.
Is there such a thing or did I dream it and what do other people use?

You really are going old school with that setup:D With Sky+ there is a copy function to transfer your recordings to a dvd recorder.
With the other standard box,you can set the planner to autoview but you'll have to set the time to record on the dvd recorder, plus you can only record the channel you're watching. If anyone changes channel then oops! recording ruined,I have had experienced this before so Sky+ is the best solution then simply make hard copies off the box when you want.

If you get a DVD recorder with Guide+ built in you can use that to control the Sky box - it has it's own 7 day EPG and, using an infra red widget, it switches the Sky box to to the appropriate channel, at the appropriate time. It's crude but surprisingly effective but, as noted above, you can only watch the channel being recorded.

Some dvd recorders will not work especially from HD boxes, due to macrovision protection....I have never managed to get any sony brand recorders to work despite there cost...so try before u buy..
