Bertie Ahern has just announced on 2FM that he is to run as an independant candidate in the Presidential election.

Hios own party won't even accept him, how does he think that the Irish people will vote for him?

I think this has the potential to hurt David Norriss' campaign also. Another Dublin candidate, who will take a lot of Dublin votes from him (no matter what he has done in the past).

David Norriss may not be strong outside of Dublin as such for a whole host of reasons.

Mickey D could be shaping up to be the front runner.

Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern declared himself as a candidate for the presidential election in an interview on Ryan Tubridy’s show on 2fm today. With the nation trying to come to grips with the latest bank bail out – bringing the rescue package to a staggering €70 billion – the news of Ahern’s declaration may be just a step too far.

Tubridy cross-examined Ahern about his intentions. Ahern said that he was confident the people of Ireland would elect him to the Aras later this year as he was the best candidate for the job. He spoke about all the good he has done for the country and the love and affection Irish people hold for him.

There were a lot of angry callers to the show and Tubridy decided not to read out many of the comments.

Today is April Fool’s Day. Well done Nob Nation.

It was definitely Bertie Ahern and it was definitely an April Fool's joke.
Bertie's political brain is intelligent enough:
(a) not to run for office in the first place after seeing how FF did in the GE
(b) not to make the announcement on April 1st if he was to run
(c) especially not after the country got such bad news of which he was amongst those responsible for
His common sense brain is unfortunately dumb enough to think that it might be funny to do such a prank and especially to time it at a new low ebb for Ireland.

He is just keeping his name in the limelight and using up more favours that were bought by selling out the futures of the Irish people.
