The car is going down a motorway the wrong way yeah?

The Video says" clears the driver of any blame" wondering why.

I suppose the truck hit the LHS and that took the worst hit. A passanger would probably have severe injuries.

I would think it means it clears the truck driver of any blame.

How do you end up going down the motorway the wrong way:eek:

Hope the truck driver took her to the cleaners.

In that case it was fairly clear cut even without the camera though. The woman in the car came down the off ramp the wrong way with another truck as a witness. Not really any way to blame the truck driver.

Lucky it was. If the driver had time to see her coming he may well have pulled to the right and jacknifed or rolled on the carriageway, could have ended up in a pileup.

I know what you mean but for cases that arent so clear thr roadhawk will pay big dividends. I think anyone thats on the road anyday should have one..

Ever seen it yourself? Not disputing what you said, just wondering:)

The more I see of those roadhawks, the more I want one. I've had many a close call on Galway roundabouts....

I have! Couldn't believe what I was seeing! I wasn't driving but we saw a truck and about two cars up ahead braking hard. When we stopped at first I didn't realise what was going on. Next thing I see an old lady driving a corsa appear from in front of the truck doing a U-turn. She was as white as a sheet!

Thankfully I haven't. Many others have. Some down to idiots looking for fun. Mostly down to drivers who simply shouldn't be on the road at all.

    Like the two posters above.

That's crazy! How the hell do these people pass their test in the first place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,671 ✭✭✭bladebrew

it happened only 2 weeks ago in cork, on st patricks day a woman drove down an off ramp into oncoming traffic, 2 people were killed,
apparently the speedo of the car driving the right direction was jammed at 140km/h (speed limit 120)
i have also seen a van driving on the hard shoulder towrds traffic on the m4, although he had his hazards on:)

the daily mail is dreadful, they say the car is a vauxhall astro:eek:,

My aunt whos a nun drove the whole length of the dual carriageway, in Letterkenny, in the wrong direction (about 2 miles). The road was newly opened and thankfully the road must have been quite as there was no accident, just a lot of light flashing and bleeping horns.
I always imagined the people seeing her coming, they'd start shouting, cursing etc (as you would) then see it was a nun:D. She hasn't done anything as stupid since.

This is Ireland where many older people received a licence without having to sit a test, where most drivers are unaware of the basic principles of driving.
Honestly, how can you be surprised?

I'm not surprised at the usual stories of bad driving that I hear (on boards and from friends and family) considering the quality of driving here overall.

But driving the wrong way on a motorway or dual carriageway is another level of incompetence altogether.

Just as I wrote that last sentence, I remembered something I saw at the Móinín Junction in Galway. I was approaching from the Dublin road and wanted to go straight ahead to the Bohermore Roundabout. I was waiting at the traffic lights, in the left lane for going straight ahead. The right lane for turning right was empty.

Cars came from the Lough Atalia road, and one of them decided to turn into the empty right hand lane and continue up the Dublin Road in the wrong lane.

Another one: Was on the Dublin Road, coming from Doughiska and going to GMIT. Girlfriend was driving and when we came to the Supermacs before the roundabout, we met a car coming in the opposite direction in our lane.

Girlfriend slowed down and had to stop, flashing the driver to get her out of the way. Driver going the wrong way also stopped, and then started beeping and gesturing for us to get out of the way. She looked pissed off. Then there was a nice moment of unity. All the cars behind us started beeping and yelling at her to get into the correct lane. She quickly realised her mistake and pulled into Supermacs to get out of everyone's way.

Sorry kbannon, I stated that it was quite a stupid, almost unbelievable, thing to do; but when I thought about it, I came up with two examples myself:o

Has it been established that it was actually the woman going the wrong way? Haven't heard any confirmation of that.

Imagine if that was a biker she hit not a truck

She should be disqualified for a few years and made go through the test process again...

I have personally experienced this fours times so far in Galway. Twice by cars coming out of Tom Hogans/Esso and turning right. This garage is on a Dual carriageway where you obviously cannot turn right as you exit....

The other two where both at the same roundabout beside the Galway clinic. I met a lady coming the wrong way on the actual roundabout (the mind boggles as to how she managed that) and the other case I was driving a truck coming to the roundabout when a car turned off the roundabout and headed toward me in the outside lane. He was not long realising his mistake and pulled onto the grass.

I have also witnessed a car heading in the wrong direction on the west bound side on the M6 toward Athlone 2 years ago. I was east bound going to Dublin. It was nuts he was flying along totally oblivious to the cars coming against him flashing their lights and diving into the other lane to avoid him.

The amount of idiots out there with a license is truely scary.

Without wanting to sound sexist, can we draw some conclusions here?

I saw a man in a van do it once, I was in passenger seat chatting away and didn't even cop it until mate who was driving started flashing him. Motorway was very quiet at the time. Your man didn't seem to notice or else had just decided he was going to go as far as next slip.

It was on new stretch around Limerick apparently its happened there a good few times despite there being signs which actually detect people going wrong way on slip and start flashing.
