Passport chip

I was travelling back to Heathrow recently and had been thinking about getting the retina scan to speed up customs. While speaking to one of the security people near the scanners she pointed out that my passport had a chip symbol on it and said I could just use that instead of getting my retina scanned.

Alas, it did not work. So, is this my passports (or my) fault or does the scanner not accept Irish passports in it's chip scanner? Has anyone tried it at Heathrow, and if so did it work for you (Irish passports)? I received my passport in October last year, just in case that makes a difference.

Can I take it that nobody has ever used the chip in their passports?

Never in Heathrow. Has worked in every other UK airport that I passed through though.
