I was locking my bike in town half an hour ago. There was an expensive Trek beside mine with the lock on the ground beside and no other lock on it. I locked it to mine and left a note with my phone number to say i'd be able to come back and unlock it.

I'll be heading home in about an hour. What should I do with the other bike if i haven't heard anything?

Left it with security. Hope whoever owns it checks with them.

Years ago, I accidently lock my bike without putting the lock through the frame, i.e. just locked the lock to the pole (special, I know). People who lived near the pole took my bike n left a note with their phone number. I rang and described the bike to them and they gave it back. Above and beyond the call of duty but it really was appreciated.

Good job littlejp! I've done this once before, put the lock on the bar but forget to put it round the frame!
