Cleaning an EGR valve

The emissions light has come up on the car and I've had it checked with a computer. The fault is with the EGR valve. I have done some checking and to replace the valve is working out at €430 plus labour to have a new one installed. I've also read that the valve can be removed and cleaned. Is this feasible?

The car is a Passat Diesel 1.9 TDi (2004).

Not impossible to do and if you are any way handy with the tools you should be able to do this.

Thanks I brought to a garage and the mechanic said he cleaned it and the fault light went off for about a mile but then it reappeared. To tell you the truth i don't know how well he did clean it. He had the car for less than an hour.

430 for the part ! Bought a new one for a golf a few years ago from the dealer and it was maybe 200 quid. I cant remember but I def wasnt near 400.

I suppose he knew exactly where to go and how to remove it. Did he clean the intake manifold? You should ask him. They clog up like no-ones business!

I'll give him a call. I was down to the motor factors to see if i could buy a non VW one and unfortunately the year I have they cannot order.
