This is the nicest looking razor ever. But its a faker, and a fraud!
Are there any real straight razors out there that look like this one?

That's pretty much shoulderless straight with a french point, thumb notch and a monkey tail.

There were thousands of razor manufactures so I would say that one of them may have come close to something like it.

Of the modern manufactures I don't think anyone is putting out razors that look like that.

A custom razor maker would be able to make one but it would not be cheap.

Here is one made by Gabor Buddel that has the thumbnoth, french point monky tail and is sholderless but made in Damascus steel.

More pictures of it in this post http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showpost.php?p=2489351&postcount=40

I disagree with you on it being the nicest looking razor ever :p

What is the nicest ever? I have no idea. There are just too many great looking razors out there. For me it would be something made from Damascus steel.

I do really like this one though http://www.royalshave.com/p/405-075-00/

You have a fine taste in razors sir, I salute you!

That Buddel razor is not mine. I wish it was though. The Wacker at Royal Shave is one I would love to get. Much too expensive for me though.

My nicest looking razor is one of these

Yeah I should have given you the link.

    This is the website http://www.revisor-solingen.de/index.html

And the razor was from this part of it http://www.revisor-solingen.de/html/6_8.html There are lots of nice looking razors on that page. You can check out their other sizes too. The page for the 5/8ths seems to be acting up at the minute. Also if you go to the one after 8/8 you can see the old razors they sell that have never been used.

And more specifically http://www.revisor-solingen.de/html/6_8_28.html I think it worked out at about €121 shipped and honed.

That is right up my price range.
    Awesome!
    Thank you!

Umm... how do you work that site!?

    I'd also need a strop.
Not an expensive one in case I destroy it.
    $36 Strop
    Or
    $21 Leather and balsa set

I have all my soaps and such from my DE.
    What else would I need?

Of course, if I were paying $36(€25) for a strop, Chris has one for €25.

    Just use the English 'tabs'. So click on 'Razors' and you get;
    rasiermesser13016747791.jpg

From there select 4/8 5/8 6/8 or 8/8 for different razor sizes. Then click on a razor to see the information about it. If you go to the 6/8 you will see what the page should look like (it should load a lot of pictures of razors) but the 5/8 page isn't working right so you will have to use the arrow button to scroll through them all.

To place an order with them send you have to send them an email; RevisorGmbH@aol.com

    Here

A cheap strop is definitely the way to go. I started with the poor mans strop kit from Whippeddog.com and now have the Filly Strop. I prefer the Filly (it feels a bit like suede and feels better when the razor is passing over it to me) but some people will prefer different things in what the strop feels like. Either would be good to start out with. It's not much of an investment if you nick it - which you probably will when you first start learning to strop.

I haven't used the strop on Chris' site so can't comment on it's performance.

You might want to pick up a barbers hone too. It's useful for giving the razor a quick touch up if it starts to feel like it's tugging. Both the strop kit and the Filly strop come with a compound for touching up the razor but this will stop working after a while. I haven't used the compound since I got my first razor and just use my barbers hone now. A few passes once a week and it should keep the edge nice and sharp.

Whippeddog has barber hones too so that was why I got my first strop there. I picked up a cheap razor, strop and hone from there for $75.

You might be better off picking up a cheap razor to see if you will actually stick with it rather than buying an expensive one only to find out you don't like it.

Looking at the ‘Basics’ two-piece kit
What say you mighty shaving men!?

    Looking at Whipped Dog now.

The basics kit works out as about €95. I think the razors are probably made by Dovo.

Check out this page http://thesuperiorshave.com/Vintage_Straight_Razors.html and go down to the first razor thats for sale - Dovo #255831. That works out as about €50 honed and shippped leaving you another €45 for a strop. I picked one up and it's a nice shaver. Took 7 days to get to me.

    The invisble edge has the same razor for it's normal retail price - works out to be €90;

I should point out that a square point generally not recommended for people just starting out as the point is really sharp and can cut you quite easy. I think it just makes you concentrate more.
