CI Insurance vs Private Health Cover

Time to renew my health insurance and trying to decide if I should go for something basic, detailed or none at all.

No health problems but racing once or twice/week so some liklihood of needing physio/x-rays/A+E or dental work at some stage. Especially in A4....need to start getting some points and upgrade

I'm wondering how good the cycling ireland insurance that comes with your licence is, what it covers and when it applies?

I briefly looked it up and it looks like you're covered for most things (hospital/dental/physio/lost earnings) but the maximum limits seem low (€2K) especially if you were in a more serious crash and the excess on all claims is €100.

So small "day to day" expenses like physio/GP/A+E/Swiftcare aren't really covered and anything really serious is only covered to €2k. Lost earnings is covered to max €150/week.

Again, this is from a quick skim so feel free to correct me.

Does this insurance apply when training on your own or with a couple of club mates or is it only for races, touring events and official scheduled club spins? How about cycling abroad?

Are you covered for third party stuff like hitting the back of a car or a wayward pedestrian?

Has anyone here claimed through it and was it straightforward? Morana?

I am no expert in the insurance the office is the best place to go with queries.
the maximum is certianly higher than 2k as I know of somebody getting double that a few weeks ago. So you would have to have a look at that one again

Does this insurance apply when training on your own or with a couple of club mates or is it only for races, touring events and official scheduled club spins? How about cycling abroad?

It covers you while doing any sanctioned CI activity/event. so trainig on your own or with a club is sanctioned. Club races, Training going to/from work is sanctioned afaik. touring events home abroad are sanctioned. IVCA events are covered.

Are you covered for third party stuff like hitting the back of a car or a wayward pedestrian?

Yes I am sure you are if it ihappens during a sanctioned event

Has anyone here claimed through it and was it straightforward? Morana?

I have never claimed but it is quite easy I believe. As I said a mate had no problems with an accident they had 3 years ago.

I have asked for a detailed FAQ to be put on the website done by the brokerage. I will see where its at and hopefully get it up there. in the meantime if anybody wants to throw out some things they would like cleared up pls b my guest.

    and BTW

guests are covered also. So if you organise an event and somebody turns up at it with no licence they can be covered as guests. you must keep a register of the name, address, etc. and the and get them to sign in.

    Very handy thread actually.

I've had a few new riders asking the extent of the C.I. insurance very recently as it happens - largely to do with whether or not they're insured when out doing a bit of extra training outside of regular club sessions.

It would be very handy if it could be sorted that a page could go up on the C.I. site. Details are good but even if it was broken down to bullet points of what is covered and what isn't (in terms of activities) and to what extent (in terms of medical cover), the procedure of what to do if involved in an incident and how to avail of the insurance should 'unfortunate-ness' occur would be excellent.

Thankfully there's been no need to call in the C.I. cover here yet but it'll be very handy to know when/if the time comes.

    Thanks Morana,

The FAQ you mentioned sounds like a great idea.

Great to see that training on your own is covered too - I thought that was a grey area.

1 broken tooth will cost alot more than 2k if it needs to be crowned, which is very possible.

FAQ will be up in a matter of days. This should be taken as the definitive guide to what you are covered for.

I will notify when its up.
