I currently have a 1.9 TDI Passat 05 which is on it's last legs ( afew things wrong with it that would cost more to fix than it's worth) , I am doing approx 90 miles motorway driving to and from work every day and would like to get something economical. I am looking at a Corolla 1.4 D4D 2007 Saloon from one of the main dealers at the mo. He is looking for 11k cash price, there is 40k miles up on it. I have driven it and while it obviously lacks the power of the TDI I was quite impressed with the power considering it is a 1.4. It is a lovely cleanm car that had one lady driver before hand.
The passat was doing about 42 MPg where the Corolla would do about 55 - 60 MPG acording to the saleman, the tax would also be half the price of the passat for the year. I would be getting 12 months unlimited mileage warranty with it. Does this seem like a reasonable price?? MY budget would be approx 10k but could just about squeeze to the 11k.

Thanks PADRAIC.M what would you consider a decent price for it??

What precisely is wrong with the Passat that would
    a) cause it to be 'on its last legs' and
    b) cause it to cost more to repair than what the car is worth?

Passats go for strong money, especially the TDIs.

I simply cannot fathom how it can cost more to fix a six year old car, especially a six year old diesel Passat than what the six year old car is worth.

    9500 cash and 6 months warranty (enigne/clutch/gearbox)

I have thought about it but probably looking at 1k plus to fix it. There is pretty high mileage on it (235k - was a company car). It needs a new timing belt, 4 new tyres, new brakes and pads and also a cv joint. NCT coming up in December so more money for that. To be honest I am trying to bring the costs down, I don't have a choice but to drive to work everyday and its currently costing me €75 a week in diesel. I would hope with a D4D I could bring that closer to €50 a week...

So you'd sell the car for 1k as is?

My brother has shown an interest in taking it off me so would probably give it to him.

No offense OP but I think you're crazy for wanting to change this car. Sounds like there's nothing really serious wrong with it anyway. You live in Mayo, plenty of mechanics there that would do that job quite reasonably.
Weigh up you're options......................if you sell that car you're going to get feck all for it due to mileage and if you buy the corrolla its going to cost you 8K minimum!!
On the other hand if you fix the vw it'll probably cost you around €700. if nothing goes wrong with it for at least a year then its cheap motoring all the way:)

That's nuts, just get it fixed and drive it on! The corolla is only 2 years newer.

is it the new model or the older model passat you have. passat is a far superior car to the bog standard corollas

whatever model it is, it's worth more than a grand. I'd be less scared of the older model.

I work in Car Sales, I will try help you, but I need to know the following about Corolla

    1. Miles or KM (is it UK Import)
    2. NCT?
    3. How many owners & service history
    4. Currrent Condition (We spend €300 average on paintwork on every car, painting bumpers, wings etc for scratches and stone chips)

    5. Fully serviced ( has it 4 new or nearly new tyres, brakes, etc.,

To say one car is €8k with 100km and one is €11k with 40k miles might look straight forward on the surface, I get hit with this arguement all the time. But you have to compare apples with apples. If I've only learned one thing while working in motor industry is that you can never take anything at face value.

    Try reading the original post.

Also try finding an 07 Corolla saloon in the UK. You'll be at it a while.

"Lovely clean car" - just had a wash?????

"one lady owner" - husband or son drives the **** out of it too??

We put corolla saloons on hire on UK plates in North.
VLC on import car will show "0" previous owners

I sold toyotas back when that model was launched, you couldn't get Diesels for love nor money. Id find it hard to believe any got exported to the uk, imported again and are now for sale.
I'm sure things are different now that the shine has gone off them.

The car sounds overpriced to me.

We put them on UK plates in the North (six counties) on hire / lease for 1 year, sometimes longer then re sell them down here.

Ever see an Opel Astra on UK plates? I have 5 of them on lease in North at the moment.

Anyways, I am splitting hairs... If this is new shape it is well worth it, especially if it has been fully serviced and that unlimited mileage warranty ( i would have this over €500 discount) is ideal with the miles he will put up on it and relatively small mileage for a diesel car for the year. Can he get a couple of hundred off it? Chance your arm, wave a laser card in front of salesman and tell him you will put a deposit down on it. .

So basically you're thinking of changing your car because it has developed just one problem (the CV joint)?

That is absolute madness to be blunt about it, especially changing it for a Corolla that is only two years newer.

Everything else that is 'wrong' with your car is just routine maintenance, fix those things and the CV joint and it will be fine again, those 1.9 TDIs didn't get the reputation they got for nothing you know:)!

If the 235k refers to 235k km then your engine is only about halfway through its lifecycle, that is just over 140k miles and that is only warming up in a TDI, those engines can go to 400,000 miles with good servicing and TLC.

Thats for all the advice folks, this isn't a spur of the moment decision to be honest. I have been thinking about if for a while now. I have thought about getting it fixed and just motoring on. Don't get me wrong the passat is a great car but I'm just wondering is it at the age now where things will start going wrong every more frequently. We only have the one car so I can't be without it for more than a couple of days.

To answer some of the questions asked :

    1. Miles or KM (is it UK Import) KM - Salesman says it is local lady who had it, is willing to give me her number to check up on it
    2. NCT? 04-2013
    3. How many owners & service history - 1 Owner, serviced in main dealer where it is being sold
    4. Currrent Condition (We spend €300 average on paintwork on every car, painting bumpers, wings etc for scratches and stone chips). VG condition - driver side mirror needs to be replaced but other than that all seems very clean
    5. Fully serviced ( has it 4 new or nearly new tyres, brakes, etc.,) Fully serviced, 4 tyres 5000 km old.
    6. Old Or New Shape - New Shape

The 235k is miles. Maybe the option is to fix the problems I have with it and try and sell it on privately.
