    Hi folks,

got a flyer in the door this morning saying 5 day membership is available in Castlelknock GC for 600 euro.

the chap on the wolf tone said basically it operates as follows:

    GUI membership included.

issued swipe card with 600 euro worth of credits on it. play before 10am on a weekday and one swipe of your card will deduct 15 euro from your overall balance. same goes for playing after 3pm.

play between 10am & 3pm and one swipe of your card will deduct 20 euro from your balance.

he did say these times may vary during the year but wasn't specific. you can play in competitions and of course the GUI handicap would allow you to enter other competitions on other courses.

the card may be topped up during the year if you spend all your credit which i would find unlikely.

i think this is an okay deal, especially as i am a shift worker and would have free time during the week.

    thoughts?

I actually looked into this. It's not a bad deal but I think, at 600 quid, that should just make you an 'no strings' five-day member. No credits, off-peak, on-peak etc. Nice course though and in a good location as well. Certainly worth considering - I just think if they had of made it a straight five-day membership for 600 quid they would sell twice as many.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 785 ✭✭✭jackal

But on the other hand, as far as I understood it, the credits can be used in the bar, pro shop etc, so it would suit someone who would only get out occasionally and would not otherwise play 600 quids worth of midweek golf.

did you put this proposition to them, what did they say?

I signed up for this deal precisely for this reason. I have only spent a couple of months in Ireland the last couple of years, and whenever I am in Ireland I play the opens at Castleknock. And when I have friends visiting I bring them to Castleknock too.

Having the ability to spend the money in the shop and restaurant is a plus, given my travel situation.

I always wonder how people decide between Castleknock and Luttrellstown if they're picking between them considering they are pretty much right beside each other and v similar price-wise. Not sure what condition Luttrellstown is being kept in these days and this 5 day deal seems an extra tipping point towards Castleknock?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,033 ✭✭✭who_ru

well luttrellstown is a longer course at 7347 yards compared to castleknock at 6703 yards. i would say castleknock is better maintained these days. i'm actually going out in luttrellstown tomorrow so i'll see how it's being kept. if i actually had to choose purely from a golfing perspective i'd chose luttrellstown, but as far as i know they are not being very proactive in making offers like this one in castleknock.

Whats the story on Luttrelstown these days? Two years ago it was closing. Then staying open just for 2010. Now still open. Has the business been resolved and is it there for the long term or is it still just a short term thing?

Fundamentally a tremendous course I think and better than Castleknock. Not played it in a while though but a few years ago it used to be in fantastic condition.

    Not to hijack the thread.

Arklow GC have a similar deal...5 day membership for €650...which i think is great!!

Ah if i lived in Castleknock or near enough,i would have gone for this deal:):)

I've played Luttrellstown about 4/5 times already this year and it's in fine nick I must say. There hasnt been a sinner on it anytime I've played it though.

Wonder if Castleknock are having any success with this 5 day offer and if so might be a good idea for Luttrellstown to copy. Its amazing how the outlooks of both these clubs has changed since the peak of the bubble.

    good deal..
castleknock is an acceptable course when green fees are under 40 quid imo

Seems like they're on to a winner with their offers... €1.6m profit in the year to April 2010.

Luttrellstown are still looking for €2k plus VAT for membership this year. Not living in the real world if you ask me. Why not a grand plus VAT and watch em queue at the door??

Property group’s golf club records €1.6m profit
    By Gordon Deegan

    Tuesday, April 05, 2011

CASTLEKNOCK Golf Club was one of five Monarch Properties companies to record a profit last year.

Accounts just filed by the group’s companies show that the Dublin-based Castleknock Golf Club plc recorded a profit of €1.6 million in the 12 months to the end of April last year.

The north Dublin-based property development group has built many of the country’s largest shopping centres, including The Square in Tallaght along with centres in Dundalk, Drogheda, Navan and Athlone.

Its developments also include Castleknock Golf Club and its €1.6m pre-tax profit include a Monarch subsidiary, Mariena Properties Ltd waiving €1.5m from Castleknock’s Golf Club’s plc loan to the firm.

The figures show that in total, five Monarch controlled companies recorded profits of €2.8m last year.

Another five Monarch companies recorded aggregate losses of €3m last year.

The figures show that the companies to make a profit include L&C Properties Ltd — a profit of €485,815; Lagonda Ltd, €298,531; M50 Motors Ltd, €274,685, and Mariena Properties Ltd, €134,991.

The returns show that Monarch Properties Services Ltd had a loss of €2m; Blackrock Business Park Ltd, a loss of €510,008, Monarch Properties, €442,194, and Ringford Company Ltd incurred a loss of €12,037.

Amongst the 10 trading companies in the Monarch Group, the figures show a net loss of €203,000.

In a note on the accounts for Monarch Properties Ltd and Castleknock Golf Club, they state that they "have reviewed the recent downturn in the financial and economic environment which has occurred in recent months and are aware of the market conditions, in which the company now operates".

"In this context, they have reviewed the carrying value of debtors and stock which are carried at cost. The directors’ view is that debtors and stock are not impaired below the carrying cost, having considered current market conditions.

They state that "the company has reviewed its cost structure in light of the downturn in the economy and the construction sector with a view to improving efficiencies where possible.

The directors state are also the view that the company will continue to receive the support to receive the support of its shareholders and the company’s bankers on relation to its future financing.

Auditors for the two companies, Asple & Co, state that "the carrying value of debtors and stocks is subject to uncertainty due to the downturn in the construction sector, which impacts the company’s customer base, however, the directors are confident that debtors and stocks have not been impaired below cost."

yeah big time creative accounting going on there, writing off a loan of 1.5 mil in the year means the p/l will get a nice little 1.5m boost. ie the club. made 100k profit.

I saw the latest offer for 5 day membership so I just went up there to check it out. The place is jam packed....I had to wait around for a few minutes just to get a parking space. I spoke to the manager there and asked about the availability of tee-times during the week. I thought it would be easy enough to get out however the slots are few and far between for the next month. You would get out but you would have to accept the odd slots that were left. They have about 170 members and have signed up 70 'five day' members in the last three weeks...not enough to clog up the timesheet so I presume that they have plenty of society bookings etc.......I'm in two minds at the moment as a result

Fair play to them though. I know it's a headache for a member if tee times are scarce - but they've thrown out this offer and it seems they've had a good response so I hope it works out for all involved, club and members alike.

well i joined up today, 5 day membership. i live close enough to it so decided to give it a go.

the car park, which is pretty small it has to be said, was full when i went in to finalise the details. The course looked in good shape. they have approx 70 5 day members now @ 600 euro a go. that works out at 42,000 euro extra income. just goes to show what happens when you pitch something at the right price.

    Hi Guys,

Can anybody who signed up for the 5 day offer give an indication of how it has gone regarding availability of time slots?

I am about to start a new job shift work and this would suit. I live in the area and have played this course a few times and I think its fantastic so Im thinking of signing up.

A post further back says its hard to get timeslots, but I will be mostly playing alone so the odd spot here and there will be ok for me.

    Cheers,
    Tom

    Tommythegun,

you'll get a time slot okay in the morning, this really is the best time to go out as societies etc usually go out from around 10am onwards so you can run into a lot of 4 balls as a result.

i'm a 5 day member since march, and a shift worker also, so the 5 day suits for now.

i believe the club is offering an upgrade to 7 day membership for 1450 euro next year, it will work along the credit system that's in place for 5 day members now, except weekend rounds will set you back 30 or 40 units depending on time of day.

I have been a member since they first brought it out. I play with my father as he joined at the same time. I book all the golf online through the website. I usually book a week or two in advance and have no issues. Only time i have an issue is if its the night before and i try to book. I need to get out between 9.20 and 9.40 as i leave the son to school and head around then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭TommyTheGun

Thanks lads, sounds like there are no issues. early morning starts are fine by me, and I have no need to avail of the 7 day membership as I will be working a couple of them, and the others I have free will be taken up with football, cycling amongst other things.

seems like the only issue is booking in advance, so i will bear that in mind.

brians947 & who_ru, are there any midweek competitions and if there are, does the same apply to booking early and in advance for a time slot?

    cheers,
    Tom

they have opens every week including during the winter on Tues or wens. Its mostly Tues. I think they do comps on Fridays but i work Fridays but i work. If you play before 9.30 its basically 15 euro or credits which you cant beat. Played the other Tuesday after the heavy rain over the weekend and you wouldn't even know it had rained so heavily.

Just looking into this offer, on the webiste it says:
Guests may pay cash on arrival or may be charged to your card
Doest this mean it takes units off your card or do the mean a "credit card" ??

    I assume its your units???

And when they say you can use your units in the pro shop/resraunt is it 1unit=€1?

You can pay any which way you choose.

Units on your membership card are €1 euro per unit, or you can pay cash/credit card if need be

Must be the only club in Ireland showing that kind of profit.

Castleknock , ok track . Always busy seem to fill it with societies.
    Have they no full members.

Why dont they make it a straight 5 day membership withouit restrictions Monday to Friday. Its a bit like Pavillion membership in Grange or Castle .
Very restricted , they only give you the hours they are trying to fill.
    Buyer beware terms & conditions.

Probably why its far cheaper than 7 day membership in these clubs?

Also, in Grange (and I believe Castle) you always have access to the practice/extra holes.

I was speakng to a customer of mine today. He is a full member in Castleknock. He says societies have taken over the place. they use GPS tracking system to keep them moving so as they get maximum numbers out each day. Pain for the members. He says the five day membership deal is going now over a year( I thought it was new ) and they are a great fill up for the club. Deal not as openended as I thought from this thread. Best check it out myself.

I guess this is why some members club cost a bit more. Society time is restricted in my club so that members can pretty much play whenever they want. Sure this costs more, but its what the majority of members want, at least for now.
I would worry about the extra maintenance required on a course that has both high traffic and high non-member traffic.
