Far as i know Beller10 once you have gotten your handicap from club and remain member each year it will keep.
However if you dont play at least 4 counting comps in the year you will not be eligible for the team events the following year.
Worth bearing in mind should you like to be involved some day.

Yep, the only requirement at the moment to keeping a valid handicap is that you continue to pay your membership & GUI fee.

It is possible that at some stage there may be a minimum number of competitions needed to keep your handicap active - I think there is that system in Scotland and England just introduced it for this year. But in Ireland you keep your handicap once you are a member. If you leave a club and join another within 6 months, your handicap can transfer over.
If you go longer than 6 months without a handicap you have to submit 3 cards at your new club an apply for a new handicap to be allocated.

The minimum number of rounds mentioned by pinseeker is just specific to those who wish to play Inter-Club golf - i.e. represent your club against another club. Lots of people really enjoy this aspect of competing and so I'd recommend that everyone play at least 4 qualifying competitions during the season so that they can potentially play Inter-Club the following year.
