Hotel in Paris - near Luxembourg & Gare de Montparnasse

Mrs Zag and the two mini-zags will be arriving in to Paris late on a Thursday - getting the RER in from CDG. They will be leaving by train from Gare de Montparnasse on Saturday.

In the interests of keeping things simple for them (especially with the late arrival), I'm looking for a hotel which is near both the RER from CDG and also Gare de Montparnasse.

From what I know (very little) of Paris, this should work out as there are 3 relevant RER stops in the vicinity - Luxembourg, Port Royal & Denfert Rochereau. So, does anyone know of any good or interesting or quirky or satisfactory hotels in that sort of area ?

In my experience Paris hotel rooms tend to be tiny unless you're going very upscale. Would you consider renting an apartment? You could try Citadines (www.citadines.com) which are serviced apartments, so that you have the space of an apartment but it's cleaned every day like a hotel. There is one in Montparnasse as far as I remember.

Another consideration is to rent privately. We've had good success with www.holidayrentals.co.uk .

Actually Montparnasse isn´t that hard to get around and the area has a few subway stops to get to any hotel you like. It´s a great area with lots of history and bohemian cafes and shops. Montparnasse hotels run from cheap to good chains like timhotel.
