Any reason you people in the know would give that I shouldn't consider this 03 Range Rover?

I'm considering a 4x4 just to look cool before anyone suggests it ;) I would actually benefit from having it.

Any other alternatives in the same price range (no higher at all) are welcome. 5 seats would be nice but not essential.
been looking at land cruisers (SWB commercial)
pajeros (SWB commercial, LWB passenger for the big boot, or pajero sport)
    Range rovers
one or two others i can't remember

    any way.
    thoughts?

Repair costs are cruel, and bills frequent.

Meant to be Wicked unreliable and super expensive to fix when things go wrong.

Forget about the purchase price for a moment and ask yourself whether you're prepared to spend the kind of money that that car will absorb in maintenance and repair costs.

Tell us what exactly you need a car to do and we'll be better able to advise you on what to look at.

if you like it, get it, just be prepared for astronomical maintenance and running costs

that diesel is slow as hell though, may as well go the whole hog and get a V8 petrol

Not the most exiting but very reliable if it is big and cool enough :-) - Rav 4 - they are extremely popular in the Nordics - basically impossible to get a good used one. Mate of mine paid 8K for a 2001 one of the below a year ago...

Also maybe consider Jeep (Grand) Cherokee?

I believe there was a second hand cayenne going cheap recently that needed a new tyre on the back :p

it doesn't have to do much. be god value, not to much maintanence (range rover is out so :) ), be good at pulling (a few odd boats etc) small bit of off roading. able to take good loads in the back, doesn't have to be covered.

not much else, pretty open minded about it all.

Wonderful car - nothing beats it for road presence and comfort. However they are very expensive if they go wrong. Gear boxes are fairly fragile, I had to get one replaced on a two year old HSE, if you get a good one you won't do better though.

I spent some time in a Land Cruiser lately - I have to say unless you spent a lot of time off road they really are a bit painful on road compared to a RR, X5 - soft roader sort of stuff. But then again - the X5 etc ain't up to much off road. That leaves the RR, maybe XC90 or a Touareg maybe as being half decent at both.
I agree by the way RR's seem to have horrific running costs.

....all true: that's why I'm only suggesting LWB -the SWB LC is awful. We didn't nickname ours 'The Bouncy Castle' for nothing. As a passenger in it, I'd be green getting out of it, sometimes......:o

It's called the HSE for a reason....when you get the bills for repair/maintenance you'll end up in hospital :D
